Job summary

Van Buren County Government is seeking a Corrections Officer to ensure custody and care of inmates at the county jail. You will report to the Corrections Sergeant, maintain security, and uphold policies in a demanding environment.

The role involves managing inmate movement, conducting checks, and enforcing rules with professional conduct. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, 1–3 years of related work, and successful completion of MSCTC LCOPAT.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years of responsible work experience preferred.
• MSCTC LCOPAT physical ability test required.
• Background checks including criminal, driving, and verification of records.
• Proficiency in English and basic computer skills expected.

Responsibilities

• Book, fingerprint and photograph prisoners and prepare property records.
• Safeguard inmates' belongings and return on release.
• Screen inmates for medical/psych conditions and report findings.
• Physically and verbally control disruptive inmates.
• Escort inmates for recreation, medical visits, court appearances, and transfers.
• Maintain head counts and document inmate movements.
• Enforce rules and file written reports on violations.
