Description

Job Summary: This employee will supervise, monitor, and assist clients with daily programs, activities and routines and provide for the care, welfare, safety and security of clients assigned to the facility. This employee is responsible for following safe work practices and maintaining safe environments in compliance with established standards, regulations and generally accepted practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for knowing the locations and behaviors of clients at all times
  • Proactive positive involvement and interaction with clients during their day-to-day programming and identified service activities
  • Responsible for interaction with clients to facilitate the development or improvement of life skills and social skills
  • Performing a variety of program activities such as wake-ups, showering, meals, snacks, recreational planning and participation, administering medications
  • Assisting co-workers and clients in maintaining a clean, safe, orderly environment
  • Assisting, and when identified, performing client tasks to ensure a clean, safe environment
  • Responsible for responding to crisis episodes clients may experience in a supportive, empathetic, respectful, and professional manner
  • Responsible for assisting in groups
  • Communicating with co-workers and the public professionally, courteously, and politely
  • Providing accurate and timely feedback to supervisor and co-workers with regard to client behaviors, responsiveness to programming and other services and treatment.
  • Documenting all service delivery and daily programming on the appropriate record including OIS completely, accurately and according to timelines
  • Participating in all scheduled meetings and training
  • Participation in scheduled supervision to review work performance and any identified goals for professional improvement
  • Following directions of supervisors promptly, accurately, and completely
  • Required to attend and successfully complete the Juvenile Correctional Officer Academy as scheduled
  • Knowledgeable of program policies and procedures
  • May be scheduled to work any shift as assigned
  • Performing other job duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of corrections security, treatment, and supportive program operations
  • Knowledge of policy directives of the agency and pertinent sections of the West Virginia Code
  • Ability to interact positively with staff, inmates and the general public
  • Ability to conduct correct contraband searches
  • Ability to use computer terminal for entry and retrieval of data
  • Ability to be a team player and work with diverse populations.

Education and Experience:

Requires High school Diploma/G.E.D. or 0-1 year experience; Prefers Associate degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice or related field; Prefers 21 years of age and above; Previous experience with target population preferred. Must be able to graduate academy; years of service at YSS or prior direct experience may be considered along with additional skills and abilities.
