Responsibilities

  • Monitors inmates to ensure a safe and secure environment as part of the facility unit team.
  • Conducts individual and group counseling and case management with inmates.
  • Coordinates with medical, psychiatric and psychology staff to ensure appropriate treatment services.
  • Schedules appointments, boards, and activities within the prison system.
  • Develops aftercare plans for inmates transitioning to community settings.

Performs specialized social service duties within the Division of Rehabilitative Services for the NHCF-W; follows established policies and procedures in the rehabilitation of inmates; provides counseling/case management either individual or in groups which may assist inmates in their transition into a community environment; does related work as required including case management, working in close and immediate contact with prisoners on a daily basis while maintaining security.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Associate's degree and 2 years of experience OR equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in social work, psychology, criminology, vocational rehabilitation, education, guidance, correctional administration, program development, parole, criminology, or in a behavioral science involving emphasis on counseling and human relations, or a related field.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license

Other Requirements: Must pass security and background screenings required for correctional environments.

Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 3+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience in law enforcement, prisons, or working with juvenile or adult offenders preferred.

AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS

Successful completion of the Corrections Academy within 12 months of hire and continuing certification as correctional line personnel as established by the certifying authority.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates as a member of the facility unit team that monitors inmates to ensure a safe and secure environment. Attends staff meetings and participates in developing strategies for managing inmates’ behavior.

Models, reinforces, redirects, and sets limits to behavior by using specified behavior management techniques; develops and implements individual goal attainment.

Conducts individualized and group orientation to inmates within the correctional system and provides programming to inmates associated with their identified risk factors.

Observes inmates and collaborates with other staff and community agencies to help develop services for resident needs.

Schedules inmates for specialized appointments, boards, and activities within the prison system.

Coordinates with professional staff (psychiatrist, social worker, and psychologist) to ensure treatment for those inmates needing specialized services.

Prepares reports, case summaries for appropriate classification and ongoing treatment and rehabilitation of inmates. Acts as liaison between the courts, parole, and community corrections to facilitate inmate movement through the prison system.

Makes recommendations and helps develop aftercare plans upon the inmate’s release into the community.
