Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's State Correctional Institution Greene is seeking a Corrections Counselor 1 to support inmates as they work toward positive change and prepare for community re-entry. You will guide growth, stability, and responsibility.

You will provide counseling and casework, maintain records, and collaborate with multidisciplinary staff to support programming and behavioral improvement. This is a full-time role with hours 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree including 18 credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections or related field (or within 3 months of graduating).
  • 18 college credits in related field or 3.5 years corrections experience to meet educational requirements.
  • Equivalent combination of experience and training with 18 credits in related areas.

Responsibilities

  • Inmate Counseling: Interview inmates, provide guidance, support conflict resolution, referrals for development.
  • Caseload Records: Develop and present reports, coordinate with families, agencies and staff.
  • Assessment Review: Analyze tests, histories, and documentation to determine programming needs and risk levels.
  • Treatment Coordination: Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff to support programming and expectations.
  • Parole Assistance: Participate in re-entry planning and prepare reports for parole consideration.

Job description

The Corrections Counselor 1 position with the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Greene offers a chance to support inmates as they work toward positive change. This role allows you to guide others through challenges while helping them build skills for life beyond the facility. You will make a meaningful impact by encouraging growth, stability, and responsibility.

This position provides counseling and casework support to inmates as they adjust to the correctional environment and prepare for community re-entry. As a Corrections Counselor 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Inmate Counseling: Interview inmates, offer guidance on adjustment, support conflict resolution, and provide referrals for social, educational, and vocational development
  • Caseload Records: Develop, update, and present reports while coordinating communication with families, agencies, and institutional staff
  • Assessment Review: Analyze tests, compile histories, and maintain documentation to determine programming needs and risk levels
  • Treatment Coordination: Work with multidisciplinary staff to support programming, counseling, activities, and expectations that encourage behavioral improvement
  • Parole Assistance: Participate in re-entry planning, secure identification documents, and prepare reports and recommendations for parole consideration
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,541.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Three years and six months as a corrections officer, and 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • A bachelor’s degree including 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
Special Requirement:
  • You must obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this job.
Other Requirements:
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
