Job description

As an Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor for the Department of Corrections, you will maintain an inmate work crew for the purpose of instructing, coaching, and educating the inmate in the field of automotive mechanics. You will provide on-the-job training and shop instruction for the vocational training of inmates in the automotive mechanic trade.

You will be responsible for instructing inmates on the proper methods of repair and maintenance of motorized vehicles and the rebuilding and replacing components of equipment such as cars, trucks, farm equipment, and small engine repairs. You will be responsible for maintaining order and discipline of inmates during work assignments, documenting worker attendance, orientation, safety training, performance evaluations, and payroll records.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hour work week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license, which is not under suspension.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
