DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS is seeking a Correctional Training Officer for Professional Development at Great Plains Correctional Center. This on-site role conducts training programs, evaluates employee training needs, and develops curricula to enhance staff skills.

Level I/II responsibilities include lesson planning, delivering classroom training, reporting, and supervising other officers. A bachelor’s degree is required; potential travel may be involved.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent; substitution for each year of education with correctional/security work or HRD experience.
  • Level II requires bachelor's plus one year of qualifying experience or master's degree; substitution rules apply.
  • Experience in correctional or law enforcement environment preferred.

Job Description Location: Professional Development/Great Plains Correctional Center

This is an on-site position and is not eligible for remote work.

Basic Purpose: Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for conducting specialized training and staff development programs at an assigned correctional facility, at a training academy or for a department region/division. This includes evaluating and determining employee training needs, preparing required curriculum and conducting training on various topics and skills.

Typical Functions:
  • Conducts job analyses and assessments to evaluate employee training needs and evaluates and develops curriculum, including lesson plans, participant manuals, videos and graphics.
  • Conducts classroom training, workshops or seminars to increase the knowledge and skills of employees in various subjects or tasks including pre-service and in-service training.
  • Prepares training reports and maintains training records on participants.
  • Schedules and coordinates training sessions and locations.
  • Provides supervision to other training officers in planning and conducting correctional training programs.
  • Coordinates department or division training or organizational development programs.
  • Manages contracts with service providers.
Level Descriptor:
Level I

This is the basic entry level at a facility or district. At this level employees perform routine professional level work in completing various training activities. This may include conducting various types of training using existing materials and plans, assisting in the development and coordination of training programs and maintaining training records.

Level II

This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned full responsibility for developing and conducting various types of training and related activities in a correctional training program at a facility, unit, or district. This will include preparing any required lesson plans or other materials, conducting classes, workshops or seminars, evaluating participant results, preparing required reports, and other related activities. Employees assigned to this level may also be responsible for providing training at an academy or division level while under the guidance or indirect supervision of a higher level Correctional Training Officer or staff member.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:
Level I

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles and methods of employee training; of correctional security policies and procedures; and of various types of equipment used in adult education. Ability is required to conduct classroom training, workshops or seminars; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare lesson plans and other training materials; and to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.

Level II

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles and methods of employee training; of correctional security policies and procedures; and of various types of equipment used in adult education. Ability is required to conduct classroom training, workshops or seminars; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare lesson plans and other training materials; to establish and maintain effective relationships with others; and to plan and conduct employee training programs.

Education and Experience:
Level I

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of correctional or security work, training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE: Correctional security management involves work at the lieutenant level and above. Experience must have been the primary responsibility in order to be considered as qualifying.

Level II

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree plus one additional year of qualifying experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of correctional or security work, training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education plus one additional year of qualifying experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or a master's degree in adult education or human resource development.

NOTE: Correctional security management involves work at the lieutenant level and above. Experience must have been the primary responsibility in order to be considered as qualifying.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in a correctional or law enforcement environment.

Special Requirements:

Some positions may require that the applicant must have conducted a minimum of 80 hours of training as a certified subject matter instructor or subject matter expert instructor in firearms, CPR, First Aid, self-defense, etc. Applicants must be willing and able to perform the necessary travel and possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and retain a valid driver's license while assigned to this job classification.
