Job Description

This role involves structured work related to resident vocational programs. Responsibilities include developing vocational training programs, teaching residents trade skills, directing resident work activities, and ensuring security procedures are followed. The employee specializes in specific trades (e.g., wood shop, machine shop, upholstery, print shop) and may supervise assistants, instructors, or other trades staff. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Typical Duties
  1. Monitor and inspect completed work to ensure quality standards.
  2. Review and modify product designs to meet standards.
  3. Estimate and evaluate production jobs for scheduling and cost.
  4. Observe resident behavior, take action to maintain safety and security.
  5. Report on resident work performance for good time evaluations.
  6. Manage resident counts for security and reporting.
  7. Develop and implement trade-specific training programs.
  8. Instruct and monitor residents to develop skills.
  9. Review and assign residents to appropriate training and work programs.
  10. Implement production schedules to meet deadlines.
  11. Control resident movement through passes.
  12. Maintain records of materials and tools to prevent unauthorized access.
  13. Adjust machinery and schedule maintenance.
  14. Communicate with vendors regarding supplies and services.
  15. Prepare daily time sheets and payrolls.
  16. Evaluate subordinate personnel performance.
  17. Investigate shop areas to prevent contraband.
  18. Manage inventory of materials and tools.
  19. Schedule and oversee delivery of products.
  20. Participate in disciplinary processes related to resident behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Must demonstrate competence in the trade through education, training, or experience, including instructing or training others.

Licensing Requirement: Must possess a valid Maine Driver’s License and Maine State Vehicle Inspection License, Class A & D, or obtain them within 6 months.
