Job summary

The Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking professionals to supervise Correctional Officers and support training and compliance within its facilities. This role involves observing practices, conducting on-the-job training, and ensuring adherence to established rules and procedures.

Offenders supervision includes movement control, reporting, and disciplinary actions as needed, with a focus on safety, security, and rehabilitation.

Qualifications

  • Six or more months of experience as a Correctional Officer or Probation and Parole Assistant with the Missouri Department of Corrections.
  • One or more years of military service, or experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Correctional Officers; develops expectations/monitors performance and work habits.
  • Assists the Corrections Training Officer in conducting orientation and in-service training programs.
  • Observes personnel to ensure compliance with established rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Conducts on-the-job training for Correctional Officers.
  • Serves as officer-in-charge of special security posts where independent judgment and responsibility are required.
  • Patrols living quarters, grounds, and buildings to observe offender behaviors and the effectiveness of Correctional Officers.
  • Prepares and submits reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules, unusual offender behaviors, observed mechanical deficiencies, and security breaches or failures.
  • Discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging worthwhile activities.
  • Inspects buildings and equipment for security, safety, and sanitary conditions.
  • Supervises movement of offenders inside and outside the correctional facility; conducts periodic counts of offenders; and searches offenders and their living quarters for contraband.
  • Arbitrates disputes and settles grievances among offenders, enforcing disciplinary measures when necessary; refers difficult disciplinary problems to an administrative supervisor.

The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $0.75 per hour medium security differential ($1,560 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a medium-security institution.

  • Performs work in accordance with established rules/regulations; receives general administrative direction and performs other related work as assigned.
  • A physical examination by a physician may be required before or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards for employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections
  • By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license
Minimum Qualifications

Six or more months of experience as a Correctional Officer or Probation and Parole Assistant with the Missouri Department of Corrections; OR

One or more years of military service, or experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
