Job summary

Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking dedicated corrections staff to maintain security, intervene during emergencies, and supervise offender movement inside and outside the facility.

The position requires being 18+, passing a background check, and completing Defensive Tactics and Standard First Aid/CPR training during Basic Training. Eligible employees may receive shift differentials and overtime opportunities, with comprehensive benefits and retirement plans.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Responsibilities

• Maintain security in buildings/towers and intervene during emergencies.
• Supervise movement of offenders inside/outside the facility; conduct counts.
• Search offenders and their living quarters for contraband; escort/transports offenders.
• Supervise offenders in housing units, during work activities, and during recreational/religious activities.
• Inspect health and safety hazards; prepare reports on offender violations or deficiencies.
• Discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; promote rehabilitation.
• Supervise visits with offenders; searches visitors/offenders/buildings/grounds for contraband.
• Perform work under established rules/post orders/specific instructions; receive general administrative direction.
• Perform other related work as assigned.

Job description

The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for full-time positions domiciled in a maximum security institution.

Hourly Pay: $22.20 (maximum security differential included)

• Maintains security in buildings/towers/other posts of an adult correctional facility; intervenes during emergencies or altercations and gains physical control of offenders
• Supervises movement of offenders inside/outside the correctional facility; conducts periodic counts of offenders; searches offenders and their living quarters for contraband; Escorts/transports offenders to predetermined locations
• Supervises offenders: in housing units; during the performance of work activities; during recreational/ religious activities
• Conducts inspections for health and safety hazards; prepares/submits reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules/unusual offender behaviors/observed mechanical deficiencies/ security breaches or failures
• Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes/discouraging undesirable behaviors/encouraging worthwhile activities
• Supervises visits with offenders; searches visitors/offenders/buildings/grounds for contraband
• Performs work in accordance with established rules/regulations/post orders/specific instructions; receives general administrative direction
• Performs other related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Special Requirements

• Ability to pass a background investigation administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
• Ability to complete Defensive Tactics and Standard First Aid/CPR training during Basic Training administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

By Assignment, a Position May Require

• Ability to complete and maintain firearms certification training administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

All requested documents MUST be received by the closing date listed.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

• A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
• A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years!
