Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Managed Care is seeking aCorrectional Physician to deliver comprehensive medical care at the Robertson Unit in Abilene, TX. The physician will diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic conditions while exercising independent clinical judgment within a mission-driven, academic health system.

You will supervise Advanced Practice Providers, collaborate with specialists, and ensure high-quality outcomes in a secure correctional setting,

Qualifications

  • Current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats acute and chronic conditions.
  • Performs minor procedures within scope of practice and coordinates referrals.
  • Provides immediate medical care for emergencies.
  • Oversees infirmary patient care, admissions, and bed management.
  • Supervises advanced practice providers and clinical staff.
  • Uses leadership and communication to support quality patient care.
  • Maintains a safe, compliant clinical environment per TTUHSC and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in after-hours call coverage and coordinates with multidisciplinary teams.

Join our dedicated healthcare team at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Managed Care where your clinical expertise directly improves the lives of an underserved patient population. As a Correctional Physician, you will provide comprehensive medical care, diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, and exercise independent clinical judgment in a dynamic and rewarding environment. This role offers the opportunity to practice meaningful medicine while maintaining a strong focus on quality, continuity of care, and patient outcomes.

Working under the general direction of the Unit Medical Director, you will have broad latitude to make clinical decisions and manage patient care. In addition to providing direct medical services, you may be asked to supervise and mentor Advanced Practice Providers (Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners), helping to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare across the unit. This position is ideal for physicians seeking a collaborative, mission-driven practice setting with leadership responsibilities and the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats acute and chronic medical conditions through patient assessments, diagnostic testing, and evidence-based treatment planning.
  • Performs minor medical procedures within scope of practice and coordinates specialty referrals when clinically appropriate.
  • Provides immediate medical care for emergencies involving patients, employees, and visitors.
  • Oversees infirmary patient care, ensuring appropriate admissions, treatment, and bed management.
Leads & Supports Clinical Teams:
  • Supervises and coordinates the work of advanced practice providers and other assigned clinical staff.
  • Utilizes effective leadership and communication skills to support quality patient care and team performance.
Ensures Safety, Quality & Compliance:
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment while adhering to TTUHSC, TDCJ, and applicable standards of care.
  • Follows institutional, departmental, and regulatory policies to promote quality outcomes and patient safety.
Supports Continuity of Care:
  • Participates in regional after-hours call coverage to ensure timely access to medical services.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and specialists to support continuity and coordination of care.
