Job summary

South Dakota Department of Corrections is hiring correctional officers for the Rapid City facility. This full-time, 40-hour-per-week role involves maintaining custody of inmates, enforcing procedures, and ensuring security across posts such as control rooms, halls, and visitation areas.

Ideal candidates are 18+, possess a valid driver's license, and have a high school diploma or GED. Training is provided; Class B retirement with 8% matching contributions is available.

Qualifications

• Observational and reporting abilities to monitor inmate activity.
• Clear verbal and written English communication is required.
• Familiarity with defensive tactics and safety procedures is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Observe inmates in various areas and monitor activity to ensure safety.
• Supervise inmates by assigning duties and monitoring work.
• Prepare incident and rule infraction reports; maintain logs and counts.
• Escort and transport inmates to and from appointments inside and outside facilities.
• Conduct searches of cells, common areas, and inmates; monitor gates and doors.
• Respond to crisis situations and enforce post orders and procedures.
