This range is provided by Alabama Department of Corrections. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.

Base pay range: $26.62/hr - $34.00/hr

Salary: $55,375.20 - $70,178.40 annually; $26.62 - $34.00 hourly. Earn up to 27% in salary increases during the first 18 months of employment.

Job Overview

The Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry-level, full-time position responsible for overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates in state prisons. Duties include supervising inmate activities, inspecting quarters, maintaining security, conducting inmate counts, and assisting inmates with personal and educational issues.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise inmate movements and activities.
  • Inspect facilities for safety and contraband.
  • Conduct inmate counts and report irregularities.
  • Complete reports on inmate behavior and incidents.
  • Drive transfer vehicles and ensure safety equipment is functional.
  • Explain rules and assist inmates with personal and educational needs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be 19 years or older.
  • Valid certification of passing the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers or proof of an associate's degree or higher.
Special Requirements
  • U.S. Citizen and valid driver’s license.
  • Completion of a 10-week training program.
  • Pre-employment physical, background check, and drug screening.
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions.
  • Honorable discharge for veterans.
