Overview

The Florida Department of Corrections is advertising the position of CORRECTIONAL OFFICER SERGEANT (STATEWIDE). This is a statewide advertisement for multiple vacancies. You will be able to select your preferred work location in the Security Background Questionnaire. Current FDC employees must apply in the internal advertisement.

ABOUT FDC: The Florida Department of Corrections is the 3rd largest state prison system in the country with over 150 facilities statewide and more than 22,000 staff members. Becoming a correctional officer with FDC means you are joining a family dedicated to ensuring public safety throughout Florida. There are career advancement opportunities from entry level as a Correctional Officer to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major and Colonel. Management positions include Assistant Wardens and Wardens. Correctional Officers can join special teams such as Rapid Response Teams, Crisis Response Team, Interdiction Units, K-9 Units, and other special teams.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Correctional Officer Sergeants are responsible for supervision, protection, care, custody, control, and physical restraint, when necessary, of inmates at a correctional institution or facility. They function as lead officer over two or more Correctional Officers assigned to inmate dormitories, confinement areas, work areas or work squads where assignment of a supervisor is not warranted; supervise and participate in the activities of the control room or the main gate of an institution; direct the activities of an entire facility on a shift. The incumbent has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code.

COMPENSATION AND INCENTIVES:

  • Criminal Justice Incentive Program (CJIP)
  • Annual salary additive for certain counties (Broward, Dade, Indian River, Martin, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, or St. Lucie)
  • Retirees may be considered for re-employment with FDC after six calendar months and will receive both salary and retirement benefits
Minimum Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years of age (no maximum age restriction)
  • Be a United States Citizen (by birth or naturalization)
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication
  • Pass a medical examination and drug test
  • Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation
  • MUST have active reserve military experience with at least one year of experience working full-time as a correctional officer at a Department of Corrections facility
