Job summary

ODRC's Rehabilitation and Correction division in Dayton seeks a licensed RN with Nurse Practitioner credentials to provide comprehensive medical care to inmates. The role covers chronic disease management, preventive care, and urgent medical services under State guidelines.

Candidates must hold a current RN license and NP certification with authority to prescribe; duties include examinations, diagnoses, and coordination with the CMO and BOMS for quality improvements.

Qualifications

  • Valid license as Registered Nurse and completion of Nurse Practitioner program with certification to prescribe in accordance with ORC 4723.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors progress of and intervenes in chronic illnesses following DRC policies
  • Administers vaccines, prescribes medications or treats acute and chronic conditions as training allows
  • Performs routine exams to assess chronic condition control and diagnose new conditions
  • Evaluates referrals and approves or disapproves specialty consultations
  • Orders and reviews lab, x-ray and other diagnostic results
  • Conducts medical reclassifications and formulary requests with CMO
  • Performs routine and emergency medical care of inmate patients
  • Examinies, diagnoses and treats within Ohio Nursing Board scope
  • Gives rounds on infirmary patients as directed by CMO
  • Documents patient interviews and assessments per BOMS guidelines and ACA standards
  • Collaborates with CMO for quality oversight
  • Attends institution and statewide medical leadership meetings
  • Takes outpatient call as directed by CMO with BOMS approval

Job description

What You’ll Do
  • Monitors progress of and intervene in the course of chronic illnesses, using the DRC policies and protocols for guidance
  • Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases & prescribe medications or administer treatment of acute and chronically ill patients & performs minor surgery as training & competency allows
  • Performs routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic conditions & diagnose new conditions
  • Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside the institution & reviews said consult reports for the recommendations, approving or disapproving accordingly
  • Orders & reviews the results of laboratory, x-ray, & other diagnostic testing as appropriate
  • Facilitates, with the CMO, the completion of medical reclassification & requests for non-formulary medications as necessary
  • Performs routine & emergency medical care of inmate patients as scheduled
  • Examines, diagnoses & treats patients within scope of practice, as identified by the State of Ohio Nursing Board as applicable
  • Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO
  • Writes up medical information gathered during patient interviews according to DRC Bureau of Medical Services guidelines, policies, protocols & related ACA standards currently in practice, documenting all assessments & diagnostic impressions, as well as any other treatment plans & follow-up parameters
  • Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight & accept suggestions, redirection, and guidance
  • Attends professional institutional-specific meetings as requested by the Warden, Deputy Warden, or CMO
  • Attends the monthly institution medical Continuous Quality Improvement meetings as an active participant
  • Attends statewide Medical Leadership Quarterly meetings as directed by the CMO
  • Takes outpatient call as directed by the CMO, after approval by the BOMS State Medical Director

Valid license as Registered Nurse; completion of Nurse Practitioner program & certified by Ohio Board of Nursing for advanced practice with valid certificate of authority & certificate to prescribe in accordance with ORC 4723.
