Job description

What You’ll Do:

This position works under the general direction of the institutional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and may be required to work at more than one institution.

  1. Monitors progress of and intervenes in the course of chronic illnesses, using DRC policies and protocols for guidance.
  2. Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases, prescribes medications or administers treatment of acute and chronic patients, and performs minor surgery as training and competency allow.
  3. Performs routine physical exams to determine control or status of chronic conditions and diagnose new conditions.
  4. Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside the institution and reviews reports for recommendations, approving or disapproving accordingly.
  5. Orders and reviews laboratory, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests as appropriate.
  6. Facilitates, with the CMO, the completion of medical reclassification and requests for non-formulary medications as necessary.
  7. Performs routine and emergency medical care of inmate patients as scheduled.
  8. Examines, diagnoses, and treats patients within the scope of practice as identified by the State of Ohio Nursing Board.
  9. Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO.
  10. Documents medical information gathered during patient interviews according to DRC Bureau of Medical Services guidelines, policies, protocols, and ACA standards, including assessments, diagnostic impressions, treatment plans, and follow-up parameters.
  11. Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight and accepts suggestions, redirection, and guidance.
  12. Attends professional institutional-specific meetings as requested by the Warden, Deputy Warden, or CMO.
  13. Participates actively in monthly institution medical Continuous Quality Improvement meetings.
  14. Attends statewide Medical Leadership Quarterly meetings as directed by the CMO.
  15. Handles outpatient calls as directed by the CMO, after approval by the BOMS State Medical Director.
Qualifications:

Valid license as a Registered Nurse; completion of Nurse Practitioner program; certified by Ohio Board of Nursing for advanced practice with a valid certificate of authority and a certificate to prescribe in accordance with ORC 4723.
