Responsibilities

Reporting to the Correctional Captain III at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position is predominantly responsible for the supervision of subordinate staff and will be assigned to the Transportation section. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completing reviews and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Insuring that all assigned equipment is operational by providing daily inspection of offenders' living areas, medical, kitchen areas and the facility to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conducting investigations, searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Serving as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility when his/her rotation is working in the absence of the Correctional Captain.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range will be $43,738 - $76,542.

The salary grade for this position is NC11 (Salary Range: $43,738 - $76,542). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry, or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors, and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or other worship services.
