Job description

Work in this class involves the ability to assist in planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a medium custody facility or institution. Employees typically report to a Correctional Captain II.

Job duties include:

  • Serve as first-line supervisors of Correctional Sergeant II’s.
  • Serve as Officer-in-Charge in absence of the Correctional Captain.
  • Assist with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers’ work schedule, and coordinate activities.
  • Assist with discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
  • Serve as shift supervisor.

This level is distinguished from Correctional Lieutenant I based on increased staffing totals, larger offender population totals and the complexity of the facility operation which may include some restrictive housing. There are also more critical decisions because the offenders are more difficult to manage.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state’s pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025.

Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About the Nash Correctional Institution: Nash Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility located in Nashville, Nash County NC. It houses approximately 796 male offenders. The facility provides offender labor to two Correction Enterprises operations located on site: the Optical Plant and the Print Plant. The Optical Plant manufactures eyeglasses for customers such as Medicaid and the Division of Services for the Blind. The Print Plant is a full-service print shop dedicated to printing services for state government agencies, public school systems, state community colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
