Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a licensed physician to provide comprehensive medical care to the inmate population. You will diagnose, treat, and manage complex medical cases, order tests, and coordinate referrals as needed.

Responsibilities include participating in rounds, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring compliance with medical-legal standards. A strong emphasis on teamwork and continuing education is required.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited medical school with current license or eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in South Carolina.
• Completion of an internship or one year residency training is required.
• Current basic life support (BLS) certification and approved prescriptive privileges, such as DEA registration are required.

Responsibilities

• Examines, diagnoses, and treats inmates with acute, chronic, and emergent medical conditions.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, imaging, and lab work.
• Develops and manages treatment plans, prescribes medications, and coordinates referrals and off-site care when indicated.
• Collaborates with nursing staff, mid-level providers, and other physicians.
• Attends staff meetings, case presentations and seminars.
• Oversees progress notes, summaries, and evaluations of patient medical records.
• Documents encounters accurately in the EHR per medical-legal standards.
• Participates in on-call rotation, including after-hours coverage and telephonic/virtual consults.
• Ensures compliance with policies and state/federal regulations in service delivery.
• Maintains required license, certifications, and continuing medical education.
