Description

The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctionalfacilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of theCommonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out themandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquireskills which facilitate non-criminal behavior.

The Correctional Farm Crew Leader at Blackburn Correctional Complex supervises a crew of inmates in the farmoperations area of the institution.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervise inmates in farm activities (planting, cultivating, harvesting crops, cleaning out barns,cutting bushes, pulling plants, transplanting seedlings, fence repairs, etc.) Provide direction to inmates onproper use of farm tools.
  • Provide direction to inmates on proper use of farm tools. Enforce safety measures. Maintainpreventative maintenance schedule on all farm equipment and maintain proper cleaning and storage of equipment.Maintains records and additional logs of supplies and inmate work time.
  • Assist in the care of horses in the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in the absence of the FarmManager. Supervise visitors to the farm and TRF as needed. Maintain preventative maintenance schedule on allfarm equipment and maintain proper cleaning and storage of tractors and equipment.
  • During inclement weather months will be in charge of the snow removal crew. Ensures that salt getsspread and roads are cleared during winter months.
  • Will assist in maintaining the grass on the farm if needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have one year of agricultural or landscaping/grounds keeping experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education or training in agriculture or a related field will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be twenty-one (21) years of age. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

May be exposed to risk of injury associated with working with animals and with farm machinery and tools which requires the following of safety procedures. Work is performed in all types of weather conditions.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
