The Vermont Department Of Corrections seeks a Facility Shift Supervisor for Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington. You will supervise security operations on a shift, manage staff, and ensure compliance with custody guidelines.

Responsibilities include coordinating inmate activities, handling incidents, conducting investigations, and mentoring staff on new policies. Requires relevant education/experience and the ability to work in a high-stress environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and two+ years of work experience including one year in a correctional institution.
  • Associates degree and four+ years of work experience including three years in a correctional institution.
  • High school diploma and five+ years of work experience including three years in a correctional institution.
  • Four+ years of military experience and one+ year in a correctional system including custody of inmates.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs correctional security and operations during an assigned shift.
  • Ensures inmate activity levels align with custody and security requirements.
  • Assists in selecting subordinate staff and in their orientation and training.
  • Arranges duty schedules, assigns staff to duty stations, and ensures adequate coverage.
  • Conducts frequent inspection tours to ensure policies and procedures are applied.
  • Develops plans for control of disturbances, fires, or attempted escapes.
  • Reviews disciplinary reports and hears inmate appeals.
  • Conducts special investigations as assigned.
  • Conducts Performance Management Interviews (PMI) with staff and provides feedback.
  • Ensures staff are trained in new policies and procedures.
  • Oversees admission and transport of inmates.
  • Directs responses to emergencies as they arise.
  • Assumes control of the facility when superiors are absent.
  • Performs crisis intervention with SFI inmates as required.
  • Plans care and supervision of DPP until psychiatric bed is available.
  • Performs related duties as required.

The Vermont Department Of Corrections is looking for a Facility Shift Supervisor for Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington.

This Position
  • Supervises and directs correctional security and operations during an assigned shift.
  • Ensures that appropriate levels of inmate activity are maintained in accordance with custody and security requirements.
  • Assists in the selection of subordinate staff and in their orientation and training.
  • Arranges duty schedules, assigns staff to duty stations, and ensures adequate coverage of all areas of the facility.
  • Conducts frequent inspection tours to ensure that department policies and facility procedures relating to security and operations are correctly and consistently applied.
  • Develops and implements plans for control of unusual incidents such as disturbances, fires, or attempted escapes.
  • Reviews disciplinary reports on inmates and hears inmate appeals.
  • Conducts special investigations as assigned.
  • Conducts regular Performance Management Interviews (PMI) with subordinate staff and provides feedback.
  • Ensures that all staff are trained in and aware of new policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the admission of new inmates and the transport of inmates outside of the facility.
  • Directs responses to emergency situations as they arise.
  • Assumes control of the assigned facility in the absence of superiors.
  • Performs crisis intervention with Seriously Functionally Impaired (SFI) inmates as required.
  • Plans and coordinates care and supervision of Delayed Placement Persons (DPP) until a psychiatric bed becomes available.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Who May Apply

This position, Correctional Facility Shift Supervisor (Job Requisition #55101), is open to all State employees and external applicants.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed largely within a correctional facility and in daily contact with inmates. High stress situations are predictable, even frequent. The potential for physical assault or injury is present. Transportation and supervision of inmates outside of the correctional facility may be required. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Overtime and emergency duty are predictable. Shift assignments may change in accordance with the needs of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher AND two (2) or more years of work experience INCLUDING one (1) year in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.

OR

Associates degree AND four (4) or more years of work experience INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND five (5) or more years of work experience, INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.

OR

Four (4) or more years of military experience AND one (1) or more years in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates.

Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory experience in direct client contact in a residential facility or law enforcement.

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
