Job summary

The Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking educators to teach adult offenders within a corrections setting. Candidates must hold a DESE teaching certificate or be eligible to obtain one, and will plan lessons, maintain records, and deliver offender programming related to cognitive behavior and workforce skills.

Responsibilities include adhering to the approved course of study, collaborating with the teaching team, and providing instruction tailored to inmates’ educational needs.

Qualifications

• Current teaching certificate issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), OR meet the eligibility requirements for, and be willing to obtain, a Missouri DESE Teaching Certificate.
• Plans/outlines classwork within prescribed limits; prepares materials for special study.
• As part of the teaching team: develops/implements/evaluates plans; participates in teacher conferences/meetings/educational research projects; maintains scholastic/attendance records; orders supplies.
• Delivers offender programming including cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills, etc.
• Receives general supervision from Education Supervisor or designated administrator.

Responsibilities

• Teach subject matter to adult offenders appropriate to educational background and certification by the Missouri DESE.
• Adhere to the state-approved course of study while using ingenuity and flexibility to fit the needs/abilities/conditions of pupils.
• Plan/outlines classwork and prepare materials for special study.
• Within the teaching team, develop and implement plans; participate in meetings; maintain records; order supplies.
• Confer with students regarding needs/progress/abilities and provide instruction and encouragement as needed.
• Deliver offender programming to include cognitive behavior, financial literacy, workforce skills, etc.
