Job summary

State of Indiana is seeking a Correctional Captain at Branchville Correctional Facility to lead day-to-day operations, supervise staff and offenders, and enforce policies and safety protocols. The role emphasizes firm, fair decision-making and the ability to respond effectively in emergencies.

Salary starts at $59,800 and may be commensurate with education and experience. The position requires recalibrating processes, overseeing inspections, and coordinating with Operations Center as needed.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily inspections of the units.
• Track, properly vet, and report all incidents to the Operations Center.
• Direct assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds.
• Manage staff including training, time management, time off approvals, specific shift assignments, corrective action and performance evaluations.
• Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation which may include encouraging offenders to accept professional assistance and treatment from staff.
• Counsel offenders in an informal and unofficial capacity.
• Oversee the records on shift reports, policy and procedure updates and violations of policies and procedures.
• Direct staff regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility.
• Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
• Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

Branchville Correctional Facility is a medium‑security facilitylocatedin Branchville, Indiana, with a capacity of more than 1,400 incarcerated adult males. The facility focuses on rehabilitation by offering several educational and vocational programs. Role Overview:

As a Correctional Captain, you will be responsible for the management, supervision, and safety of the facility, incarcerated individuals, coworkers, and the general public. In addition, you must interpret and apply the IDOC facility rules, policies and procedures in a firm, fair and consistent manner to both incarcerated individuals and staff. You will be responsible for the review and development of policies and procedures related to custody. In the event of an emergency, effective leadership must be immediately exhibited.

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Oversee daily inspections of the units.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

You must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment:

• Complete all mandatory training includingthe DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses.

A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and at least 4+ years of experience in a correctional institution, law enforcement or military law enforcement, and two (2) years of experience as a correctional supervisor or supervisory training in a related field applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
