The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office ("MSO") is seeking a qualified professional to work as a Correction Officer/Boiler Room Engineer ("Engineer") in the Engineering department at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. The work schedule is Sunday through Thursday with an eight‑hour flex shift between 9:00p.m. and 9:00a.m. Days off are Friday and Saturday. The hours and days off are subject to change at the discretion of Management and the needs of the Engineering department. Under direct supervision of the Senior Correction Officer (Sergeant) or employees of higher grade, the Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, assessing, and responding to alarms, maintaining and operating all boilers, furnaces and auxiliary boiler equipment, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and other similar mechanical items. This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500).
Work in a correctional facility; working on weekends, nights, holidays and subject to being forced to work over eight (8) hours depending on operational needs. May encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders; may be required to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; work alone in an isolated area; lift and carry heavy objects; restrain inmates/detainees in accordance with policy. May also work under exposure to adverse weather conditions.
The individual selected for the position of Correction Officer/Boiler Room Engineer shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules regarding safety and security.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Must have an active valid driver’s license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts, an acceptable driving record, and the ability to pass a criminal background check.
Starting salary range is $76,800.38 to $79,920.38 plus additional incentives, bonuses and employment benefits, provided through a collective bargaining agreement.
