What You'll Do:
- Supervise correction officers (COs) and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to posts or special duties (e.g., tool control, armory, count office, mail room, transportation, visitation).
- Instruct and evaluate COs.
- Assign staff to posts.
- Enforce post orders and assignments.
- Ensure COs and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive, and properly positioned by inspecting each post.
- Enforce the use of body-worn cameras and ensure proper utilization of body scanners on incarcerated individuals.
- Conduct surveillance security of the institution and property.
- Prevent escapes, apprehend escapees, and prevent incidents threatening security and safety, including the use of force when necessary.
- Perform rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, safety compliance, contraband, and security.
- Monitor and direct custody during inmate movements (meals, infirmary, education, work sites).
- Attend monthly meetings and assist in supervising correction officers per the unit plan.
- Assist in supervising activities and developing unit procedures.
- Ensure availability and proper use of PPE for correction officers.
- Respond to incarcerated persons' needs and manage disputes, reporting abuse allegations.
- Participate in emergency response and security protocols.
- Gather information and write reports on incidents and disciplinary actions.
- Complete performance evaluations.
- Schedule work, bed movements, meals, and activities.
- Serve on disciplinary boards and other committees as needed.
- Ensure safety of equipment and supplies.
- Make periodic rounds to maintain security.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years of training or experience in security enforcement for detention of felons or mentally ill individuals; 6 months of supervisory training or experience; or equivalent qualifications.
- If operating regulated vehicles, must have a valid commercial driver’s license.
- Or 12 months of experience as Correction Sergeant/Counselor.
