Job description

What You'll Do:

  • Supervise correction officers (COs) and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to posts or special duties (e.g., tool control, armory, count office, mail room, transportation, visitation).
  • Instruct and evaluate COs.
  • Assign staff to posts.
  • Enforce post orders and assignments.
  • Ensure COs and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive, and properly positioned by inspecting each post.
  • Enforce the use of body-worn cameras and ensure proper utilization of body scanners on incarcerated individuals.
  • Conduct surveillance security of the institution and property.
  • Prevent escapes, apprehend escapees, and prevent incidents threatening security and safety, including the use of force when necessary.
  • Perform rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, safety compliance, contraband, and security.
  • Monitor and direct custody during inmate movements (meals, infirmary, education, work sites).
  • Attend monthly meetings and assist in supervising correction officers per the unit plan.
  • Assist in supervising activities and developing unit procedures.
  • Ensure availability and proper use of PPE for correction officers.
  • Respond to incarcerated persons' needs and manage disputes, reporting abuse allegations.
  • Participate in emergency response and security protocols.
  • Gather information and write reports on incidents and disciplinary actions.
  • Complete performance evaluations.
  • Schedule work, bed movements, meals, and activities.
  • Serve on disciplinary boards and other committees as needed.
  • Ensure safety of equipment and supplies.
  • Make periodic rounds to maintain security.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years of training or experience in security enforcement for detention of felons or mentally ill individuals; 6 months of supervisory training or experience; or equivalent qualifications.
  • If operating regulated vehicles, must have a valid commercial driver’s license.
  • Or 12 months of experience as Correction Sergeant/Counselor.
