POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Position Title: Bus Driver
  • School/Department: Transportation
  • Supervisor: Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation
  • Terms of Employment: Per Classified Conditions of Employment
Primary Function

To safely transport students to and from school and to and from education-related and extracurricular trips.

Essential Duties
  • Operate a school bus as directed by the Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation and in accordance with all applicable laws and policies.
  • Direct and assist students to ensure they load and unload the bus safely at their assigned bus stops.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation and school administrators in the management of student behavior expectations and procedures.
  • Maintain assigned school bus so that it is clean and orderly.
  • Perform routine maintenance on assigned bus as directed by the Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation.
  • Monitor and report any hazards or concerns that pose a threat to students, staff, and others to the Director of Transportation and Assistant Director of Transportation.
  • Complete and submit appropriate records as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Characteristics
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • The required licensure and training to drive a school bus
  • Some prior experience driving commercial vehicles is preferred
  • The ability to drive safely and adhere to all laws pertaining to school bus operation
  • A positive, people-centered, and solution-focused attitude towards duties and students, staff, and others
  • The ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with others
  • Effective communication skills
  • The ability to use various computer and technology resources
  • A past record clear of criminal activity and child abuse or neglect
Working Conditions

The duties of this position are performed primarily on a school bus. Persons are required to safely operate a school bus and all of its controls while maintaining focus on the road, other vehicles, and students and pedestrians. Occasionally, persons are required to stand, walk, and communicate and direct students on a school bus. Persons are also required to assist students when loading onto and unloading from the school bus, which may require persons to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise levels in the working environment may be moderately loud or loud. Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
