Job description

Job Summary

Manages all aspects of a portfolio of adversely risk-rated commercial credit relationships, which may include C&I or CRE loans and related bank services such as letters of credit, interest swaps, and complex treasury management products. Handles lead/agent or large participations in syndicated C&I or CRE loans with complex structures and intercreditor issues across multiple capital levels. Develops workout strategies and negotiates directly with borrowers and professionals to reduce, rehabilitate, or eliminate credit risk outside the Bank's risk appetite, minimizing economic impact.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage portfolio activities including servicing, monitoring, credit actions, legal review, and document retention.
  • Serve as the primary contact for assigned customers, building relationships with all stakeholders involved in credits where Synovus is not the sole financial stakeholder.
  • Develop, negotiate, document, and execute risk reduction strategies, including restructuring credit and repayment terms, obtaining collateral, and enforcing rights.
  • Maximize economic value and minimize losses by balancing resolution strategies with policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel to analyze legal positions, develop strategies, and draft necessary legal documentation.
  • Navigate bankruptcy reorganizations or liquidations, including negotiating plans and monitoring liquidity.
  • Establish and monitor collateral value, working with professionals and stakeholders.
  • Continuously monitor credit risk and performance, recommending adjustments as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance income through fees or interest.
  • Represent the Bank in enforcement actions and court proceedings, maximizing economic outcomes.
  • Minimize litigation expenses and ensure credit files are accurate and complete.
  • Produce reports supporting workout activities, including memos, approval forms, and risk ratings.
  • Oversee cash collections and coordinate workout plan implementation.
  • Travel to meet with borrowers, inspect collateral, and build relationships.
  • Mentor junior colleagues as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, laws, and risk limits, including BSA, AML, and OFAC.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree required; preferred in Business Administration, Finance, Real Estate, or related fields, or equivalent experience.

Minimum Experience:

  • 10+ years in commercial lending or equivalent experience in related roles, including at least 5 years in commercial lending.
  • 7+ years working on complex wholesale credits with upper middle market or larger debtors.
  • 3+ years in commercial workout and restructuring, including at least 2 years in complex credit resolution.

Certifications:

  • None required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Advanced skills in commercial credit analysis, documentation, and structuring.
  • Deep understanding of complex capital structures and legal agreements.
  • Strong knowledge of financial statements, banking laws, and regulations.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence, make sound judgments, and prioritize effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and bank-specific applications.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight stays.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Experience with bank workouts, complex restructuring, bankruptcy, litigation, and foreclosure processes.
  • Completion of formal bank credit training programs.
