Job summary

Qualifications

  • Axon certification required or achievable within 6 months.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

Job Description

Wellmark is hiring a part‑time Corporate Security Specialist for our Des Moines, Iowa office.

Part‑time hours will average 20 hours/week or less. Possible shifts include second and third shifts on weekdays (Monday‑Friday) and first, second, and third shifts on weekends.

As a Corporate Security Specialist at Wellmark, you will play an important role in supporting the safety and security of company assets, facilities, and personnel. In this position, you will conduct routine patrols, monitor security systems, and respond to incidents with a calm and professional approach. Serving as a visible on‑site presence, you will help deter potential threats while contributing to a safe and secure environment for employees, visitors, and stakeholders. You will work closely with other members of the security team and partner with internal departments and external emergency personnel to support day‑to‑day security operations and response efforts.

The ideal candidate is an early‑career security professional or someone with foundational experience in corporate security, law enforcement, military service, or a related field. You bring a basic understanding of security operations, incident response, and risk awareness, along with the ability to remain composed and follow established procedures in high‑pressure situations. You demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a willingness to learn conflict resolution and de‑escalation techniques. Professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion are essential. Familiarity with security technologies, defensive tactics, and emergency medical protocols (such as AED use) is beneficial, with training and certification opportunities provided. You are a dependable team player who is eager to grow your skills and contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (bachelor’s degree in security management or related field preferred).
  • 2+ years of experience in a security role, preferably within a corporate environment or a related security/protective services role; or equivalent training or experience (i.e. military or law enforcement training and experience).
  • Demonstrated expertise in risk assessment, and emergency response.
  • Conflict resolution skills, including the ability to de‑escalate situations and engage with offenders.
  • Familiarity with emergency medical protocols (e.g. TCCC/TECC), AED operation, and crisis response strategies.
  • Ability to think critically, applying logic and sound judgment in high‑pressure situations to assess threats and respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of defensive tactics and security equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism, especially when handling sensitive security information or incidents.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a security team, supporting internal departments and interfacing with external emergency personnel as needed.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Axon certification required, or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in a security role or a related security/protective services role; or equivalent training or experience (i.e. military or law enforcement training and experience).
  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or equivalent certification.
  • Military or law enforcement background.
  • Experience in corporate security or high‑profile executive protection.
  • Familiarity with and the ability to be certified with limited security defensive equipment.
Additional Information

  • Secure premises and personnel and prevent losses and damage by reporting irregularities. Maintain detailed records of security activities and incidents.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency services as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and industry standards for corporate security.
  • May provide security support for corporate events and meetings and business‑related initiatives as needed.
  • May conduct security training and awareness programs for employees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Office‑based: The nature of the job duties for this position will require you to be in the office 100% of the time. Your presence in‑office is critical to effectively perform the responsibilities of the role. Occasional remote work may be permitted based on workload and/or other ad‑hoc situations that support it, with manager approval.
