Amazon seeks a Patent Attorney to join the Devices patent team, protecting innovations behind consumer electronics and software powering them. You will advise product teams, coordinate with outside counsel, and help grow a global patent portfolio for devices and services.

Preferred location Seattle, Sunnyvale, Arlington, with Arlington, VA being considered. Occasional travel and collaboration across teams and geographies are expected as you counsel on strategy and risk.

Qualifications

As a Patent Attorney on the Devices patent team, you'll work directly with product managers, developers, engineers, and scientists to identify, protect, and counsel on intellectual property across a growing US and foreign patent portfolio — becoming a trusted advisor to the teams building new consumer devices and experiences that delight millions of customers.

Occasional domestic travel is required. Seattle, WA is the preferred location for this attorney, but Sunnyvale, CA and Arlington, VA will be considered.

A day in the life

Your primary focus is partnering with business and technology teams to launch and protect new products and services. You'll move between invention harvesting sessions, patent prosecution strategy, and IP risk counseling — balancing independent work with cross-functional collaboration across multiple teams and locales.

About The Team

You'll join a collaborative group of experienced attorneys and legal professionals who provide a broad range of intellectual property counseling across Amazon and build a world-class patent portfolio. While each attorney supports a defined set of businesses and projects, the team regularly partners on shared IP challenges, exchanges insights, and draws on each other's technical and legal expertise. Most of the team is based in Seattle, with colleagues also located in Silicon Valley, Arlington (VA), other California offices, and remote locations across the US.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of post bar admission legal experience
• Juris Doctor and membership in one state bar or equivalent
• Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Understanding of a wide variety of technology areas including: consumer device hardware and software, server-side infrastructure supporting the same, product design, systems for managing and delivering all types of digital content, machine learning, computer vision, and wireless communications
• Ability to manage IP related activities for many business and technology teams in different locales, including training the business on patent filing and strategy, idea harvesting, management of patent application preparation and prosecution, and assisting in patent acquisitions, licensing, litigation, and open source issues
• Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
• Effective oral and written communication skills in communicating business and legal issues to a wide variety of audiences including developers, engineers, business leaders, and legal professionals, at all levels of the organization
• Have personally prepared and prosecuted at least 20 patent applications

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
