We are seeking an experienced Corporate Controller to provide leadership for the Company's accounting, financial reporting, construction accounting, cash management, job costing, banking support, surety coordination, insurance coordination, and financial process improvement initiatives at its new corporate headquarters in Phoenix. The Corporate Controller will lead the accounting function, ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, strength en job cost visibility, support project-level financial discipline, and provide practical financial information to ownership and senior leadership. The role requires strong construction accounting experience, hands-on leadership, disciplined close processes, and comfort working with ERP and construction financial systems including Acumatica and Job Planner. Company-wide IT and HR functions are managed separately; this role is focused on finance, accounting, reporting, construction accounting systems, and financial process improvement.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Core Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Oversee and manage the Company's accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting coordination, cash management, job costs, general ledger maintenance, and monthly close.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, accountability, and clear review procedures.
- Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, cash flow reports, and other financial information required by ownership and senior leadership.
- Maintain strong internal controls to protect Company assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, Company policies, and relevant financial reporting requirements.
- Facilitate external audit support, tax return preparation support, and required financial documentation for outside accounting advisors.
Construction Accounting, Job Costing, and Project Financial Controls
- Oversee construction accounting processes, including job cost reporting, cost-to-complete analysis, work- in-progress schedules, contract schedules, and completed contract reporting.
- Conduct monthly job cost-to-complete meetings with project management teams and help identify budget variances, cost trends, forecasting issues, and margin concerns.
- Develop processes that support adherence to contract requirements, billing requirements, subcontractor payment controls, and Company financial procedures.
- Review subcontractor draw requests approved for payment and support disciplined payables management tied to cash position and project status.
- Apply advanced cost accounting knowledge to analyze project performance and identify financial risks or opportunities.
Cash Management, Banking Support, Surety, and Insurance Coordination
- Prepare, analyze, and validate cash forecasts, liquidity reports, and forward-looking cash requirements.
- Support weekly cash management, including payables planning, collections visibility, cash position reporting, and leadership review of payment priorities.
- Serve as the primary finance operating contact for banking information requests, with ownership or senior leadership retaining executive-level banking relationships and final authority.
- Coordinate financial reporting packages and information requests for surety relationships, bonding capacity discussions, and related financial submissions.
- Coordinate financial information required for insurance renewals, audits, claims support, and broker requests.
Budgeting, Forecasting, Analysis, and Leadership Support
- Develop and manage the annual budget process and monitor budget-to-actual performance.
- Prepare forecasts and financial analyses that help ownership and senior leadership evaluate operating performance, cash flow, job profitability, and business trends.
- Maintain key financial and operational performance metrics.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, stronger controls, and operating efficiency.
- Work closely with project management, operations, and executive leadership to provide financial insight for business decisions.
- Attend management and staff meetings as required and communicate financial information clearly to non- financial leaders.
Finance Systems and Process Improvement
- Use and help optimize finance and construction accounting systems, including Acumatica and JobPlanner.
- Improve finance workflows, reporting structure, job cost visibility, close procedures, and accounting team processes.
- Partner with outside IT resources or system vendors only as needed for finance system support, reporting, data access, and accounting process needs.
Accounting Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team with a focus on accountability, accuracy, timely execution, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with ownership, senior leadership, and outside HR resources as needed for accounting team staffing, performance processes, and role clarity.
- Build clear documentation, calendars, checklists, and responsibility assignments for recurring accounting and finance processes.
Education And Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- CPA or CCIFP strongly preferred; both would be ideal.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, preferably with substantial construction industry experience.
- Strong construction accounting background, including job costing, WIP reporting, cost-to-complete analysis, contract schedules, and cash forecasting.
- Experience with Acumatica strongly preferred.
- Experience with JobPlanner strongly preferred.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort building practical reports, reconciliations, forecasts, and management schedules.
- Experience supporting banking, surety, audit, tax, and insurance information requests.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, financial reporting standards, and construction accounting best practices.
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly and concisely to ownership, operations, project management, and accounting staff.
- Hands-on, practical, accountable leader who can manage deadlines and improve processes without requiring a large corporate infrastructure.
