American National Insurance Company was founded in 1905 and is headquartered in Houston, TX, with several locations across the US: League City, TX, Springfield, MO, and Glenmont, NY.

Our Summer Internship Program is designed to provide students with meaningful, real-world corporate experience while helping build a strong, long-term talent pipeline for American National. The program blends hands‑on, role‑related project work with intentional learning, leadership exposure, business education, and relationship‑building opportunities. In addition to contributing to their respective departments, interns will participate in professional development experiences, connect with leaders through conversational Leadership Lens sessions, gain broader business perspective through cross‑company spotlight sessions, and build community with fellow interns and employees across the organization.

Our 2027 summer internship program begins on Monday, May 24 and ends on Friday, August 6. An optional extension to August 13 is available. Intern positions are paid hourly with a full‑time schedule of Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week, for the entirety of the program.

Team Description

The intern will have the opportunity to work with team members across multiple compliance disciplines, including regulatory affairs, employment compliance, privacy, business area compliance support, conduct and ethics, and data/reporting. In addition, the intern will gain exposure to business leaders throughout the organization, attend department and leadership meetings, and participate in professional development and industry training opportunities.

  • You will work on real projects that support our mission to uphold integrity, manage risk, and navigate complex regulations
  • Gain valuable experience and professional growth, while we develop from your fresh perspectives and additional support for key compliance initiatives
  • Develop skills in regulatory research, policy analysis, risk assessment, and data reporting
  • Strengthen your communication, ethical decision‑making, and project management abilities
  • Collaborate with other departments on cross‑functional initiatives related to Corporate Compliance programs
  • Work with Human Resources teams on ethics and conduct policies, partner with Legal on regulatory interpretations, and assist IT. with data privacy and security compliance

Tools and Technical Exposure
  • The intern will gain experience with a variety of business, collaboration, research, and compliance‑related tools used throughout Corporate Compliance and the broader organization - Exposure may include:
  • Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint, for collaboration, communication, project management, and reporting
  • Internal document management, records management, and policy repositories used to maintain compliance‑related documentation and support governance activities
  • Compliance tracking tools, logs, calendars, and reporting systems used to monitor regulatory requirements, action items, training activities, and program effectiveness - Example: RegEd CODE
  • Research resources used to monitor regulatory developments, industry trends, and compliance best practices
  • Training administration and compliance education platforms that support employee training and compliance awareness initiatives - Example: Navex
  • Emerging technologies and AI‑related tools, including participation in research regarding potential applications of artificial intelligence within compliance programs and processes
  • In addition to technical tools, the intern will gain practical experience working within a regulated business environment and learn how compliance professionals use systems, technology, and data to support regulatory compliance, risk management, examinations, training governance, and business operations
Qualifications We’re Looking For
  • We are seeking a motivated student who is interested in gaining practical experience in corporate compliance, risk management, regulatory affairs, or related business functions.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
  • Pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Compliance, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Human Resources, Political Science, Public Administration, Legal Studies, or a related field
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with team members and business partners
  • Demonstrated professionalism, initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learn
  • Coursework or experience in areas such as business law, corporate governance, risk management, auditing, regulatory compliance, ethics, human resources, insurance, finance, data analytics, or project management would be beneficial. Relevant extracurricular activities, leadership experience, research projects, internships, or involvement in student organizations are also desirable.
  • Most importantly, we are looking for a candidate who is intellectually curious, eager to learn about the insurance industry and corporate compliance profession and interested in contributing to meaningful projects that support the organization’s regulatory, governance, and business objectives
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
