Job summary

BAC is seeking a Mechanic II to perform water-tight corner and connection welds on various sheet metal in a shop setting. The role requires proficiency in MIG welding and plasma cutting, with ability to work independently and train junior mechanics.

The ideal candidate will interpret shop documents, meet FPY targets, and maintain safety and lean practices on the production floor. This position may involve mentoring and flexible workstation assignments.

Job description

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of performing water tight corner and connection welds on various types and gauges of sheet metal. As an experienced mechanic, the Mechanic II has a high level of proficiency in welding fabrication and is competent to work independently in the majority of functions. The Mechanic II model’s BAC’s values of of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovationto co-workers and provide training to junior mechanics as assigned. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
  • Interpret BAC shop documents & perform cut out operation using Plasma cutting process & equipment on galvanized and stainless steel panels.
  • Weld water-tight corner welds & connection welds on galvanized and stainless steel using MIG welding procedures.
  • Meet the FPY requirements as stated in Class C Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ).
  • Responsible for the accuracy of his/her work, maintain a steady work pace and avoid the loss of production time by adhering to safety rules and scheduled break periods.
  • Help assist and train junior mechanics.
  • Continuously grow skills and expertise in order to flex to the maximum number of workstations
  • Meet or exceed production goals for shift.
  • Knowledgeable of and meets quality standards on a consistent basis.
  • Committed to achieving departmental safety goals.
  • Maintains and sustain 5’s in the department.
  • Fulfill the role of MI senior mechanic in his or her absence
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed and assigned.
  • Ensure individual activities embrace sustainability,reduce the impact on the environment, minimize waste, maximize recycling, minimize energy and water usage.

NATURE & SCOPE

Reports to Team Leader, Station Leader or senior mechanic as assigned. Work is primarily related to welding department, but may be flexed to other departments as order demand dictates. May be assigned the training and mentoring of junior mechanics.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
  • Demonstrated competent writing skills including the ability to document a process in a logical and coherent manner. Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or email that are professional, concise and clearly understood.
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customer and co-workers. The ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate
  • Must pass the Class C Welder training & theoretical testing.
  • Ability to demonstrate welding technique to Class E Corner Welders.
  • Must pass the practical requirements as stated in Class C Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ)
  • Proficient with MIG welding & Plasma cutting process and equipment.
  • Interpret fab sheets & channel parts & sub-assemblies in the order required for the next operation.
  • Ability to understand and react to job schedules.
  • Read measuring devices: weld gage, inclinometer & tape measure.
  • Able to read and understand all types of BAC shop documents – Submittals, Fabrication Sheets & Assembly Lists (BoM’s).
  • Able to interpret basic welding symbols & engineering drawings.
  • Able to identify different welding wires and gas for proper application.
  • Competent in math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional computations, and fraction to decimal conversions.
  • Good overall knowledge of the variety of BAC products
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt quickly to change.
  • Understanding of elementary and intermediate LEAN principles including 5S, Kanban, one piece flow, and basic continuous improvement techniques
  • Familiar with all appropriate procedures, policies, and standard work instructions for their area
  • Demonstrated competence in BAC quality procedures and processes to follow when a quality issue is identified
  • Computer skills include competence in locating relevant instructions and forms on the LAN or other databases
WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Standing is to be expected up to 100% of the time. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Wearing of additional PPE including face shield and welding jacket. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Exposures include elevated noise levels associated with a manufacturing environment, fluctuations in temperature ambient conditions as well as intermittent exposure to the weather in and about the yard and dock areas. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected. Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
