Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) in Jefferson City seeks a core drill operator to lead a drilling crew and collect material samples for subsurface investigations.

You will oversee setup, operate the power control center to control equipment, and maintain core handling and records across sites statewide. A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, five years of drilling experience, OSHA 10, and a medical exam are required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET required.
  • Valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, interstate status (EI or NI).
  • Five years of exploration drilling experience.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification within 90 days.
  • Medical-physical examination and work simulation completion.

Responsibilities

  • Leads crews in drilling activities to obtain material samples and data for subsurface investigations.
  • Directs the setup and dismantling of drilling locations.
  • Operates power control center to manage mast movement, pipe/casing, rods, and drilling fluid pressure.
  • Supervises removal, packing, and identification of cores; creates geological logging.
  • Keeps inventory, equipment, and vehicle records up to date.

Job Location: Central Office, 1617 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO

Why You’ll Love This Position

What You'll Do
  • Leads crews in drilling activities necessary to obtain material samples and data for subsurface investigations.
  • Directs the selection, set up, and dismantling of drilling location.
  • Operates power control center from drilling station to raise and lower mast, install pipe, casing, core barrels and drill rods, govern speed of rotation, bit penetration rate, and drilling fluid pressure.
  • Supervises removal, packing, and identification of cores, and creates a geological logging of boring holes.
  • Maintains inventory, equipment, and vehicle records.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]).
  • Five years of experience in exploration drilling.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification required within 90 days.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
Special Working Conditions
  • Job requires continuous, statewide, overnight travel.
  • Job requires heavy physical exertion and effort. Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials
Preferred Qualifications
  • Department of Natural Resources Certification for monitoring well installations.
