Job description

Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications include:

  • Certification/License: Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED. Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Experience: Successful prior experience as a bus driver, preferably in a school district or transporting children.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, road signs, and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and follow procedures, manuals, and traffic signs.
  • Physical ability to move through the bus, center, and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Job Goal: Under supervision, ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely drive a school bus on designated routes, adhering to schedules, and loading/unloading students.
  • Transport students, teachers, and others on field or activity trips.
  • Inspect the bus daily for safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning.
  • Ensure communication devices are operational before trips.
  • Report mechanical issues, traffic violations, or accidents promptly.
  • Maintain order and discipline among students courteously, reporting incidents as needed.
  • Track route timing and efficiency metrics as requested.
  • Maintain and submit required records and reports.
  • Follow procedures to ensure no child is left alone on the bus and all children have departed after routes.
  • Inventory emergency and first aid supplies and report needs.
  • In emergencies, evacuate children per procedures, follow medical emergency protocols, and complete reports.
  • Participate in training and professional development.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform operational functions such as stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Ability to lift at least 20 pounds.
