Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or relevant field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism and deadline environments.
  • Excellent skills in news writing and editing for publication.
  • Familiar and comfortable creating content for social media.
  • A mix of demonstrated skills, abilities, and knowledge may be considered in place of educational requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Daily editing, story assignment, and publishing coordination with Digital Editor and Social Media Editor.
  • Uses solid news judgment to recognize relevant and engaging stories for our audience.
  • Attends weekly editorial pitch meetings and team meetings for ongoing training and pitch development.
  • Maintains deadline and publishing calendar on Monday.com; coordinates MMJ collaborations.
  • Collaborates with outside media partners and RMPM departments on projects and initiatives.
  • Participates in DEI training and maintains high standards of ethical reporting.

Rocky Mountain Public Media, Inc. (RMPM) is the parent company of Rocky Mountain PBS, KUVO Jazz, and The Drop. You edit for ideas as well as copy and enjoy working closely with reporters to map out their coverage and develop stories. This role requires stepping into a beat newsroom, and you are able to catch on and contribute without shying away. You enjoy collaborating with multimedia journalists and producers on documentaries, series, and news stories around Colorado and deftly manage short- and long-term projects. Most importantly, you're self-directed, creative, and curious about how Coloradans live, work, and play in one of the country's most dynamic regions. This is a part-time, temporary position anticipated to begin on October 15, 2026, and end in February 2027. This position is not eligible for employee benefits.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily editing, story assignment, article uploading, and coordinating publishing with Digital Editor and Social Media Editor for reports covering communities across the state
  • Uses solid news judgment when recognizing relevant and engaging stories that serve our audience
  • Attends weekly editorial pitch meetings and team meetings for ongoing training, troubleshooting and pitch development
  • Maintains deadline and publishing calendar on Monday.com, assigns and identifies potential collaborations between MMJs for ongoing coverage
  • Collaborates with outside media partners and RMPM departments on projects and initiatives
  • Actively participates in RMPM's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training program and maintains high standards of ethical behavior when reporting from the field and representing RMPBS to the public
  • Maintains a spirit of curiosity, experimentation, and creativity in trying out new formats and projects
  • Other tasks as assigned and/or required

Minimum Qualifications of Position

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or relevant field
  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism and deadline environments
  • Excellent skills in news writing and editing for publication
  • Familiar and comfortable creating content for social media
  • A mix of demonstrated skills, abilities, and knowledge may be considered in place of educational requirements

ADDITIONAL Qualifications of Position

  • Must be able to work both independently and as a collaborative and productive team member with strong interpersonal skills

  • Must thrive in a deadline environment and possess exceptional time management, decision-making, and organizational skills

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable for driving station vehicles

Work Environment

The Denver-Metro Area editor will work in a hybrid work-from-home/office environment, with in-person days at the Buell Public Media Center in Denver's Ballpark neighborhood. This position will work up to 30 hours per week and requires some schedule flexibility, including occasional evenings and weekends.
