Job summary

MemorialCare Health System is seeking a Coord, SPD MDC Shift in Long Beach, CA, to lead Sterile Processing operations during the evening shift. You will coordinate decontamination, sterilization, and instrument distribution, acting as a technical resource and ensuring compliance with procedures.

The role requires several years of experience in sterile processing, certification, and strong collaboration with OR staff, nursing units, physicians, and vendors to support efficient patient care.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years' relevant experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years' leading and/or training junior staff preferred.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterilization processes preferred.
  • Experience with workflow coordination, training, or quality assurance preferred.
  • Experience with complex specialty instrumentation and vendor/loaner tray management strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates daily workflow activities within Sterile Processing to support decontamination, sterilization, storage and distribution.
  • Serves as the primary technical resource during assigned shifts for instrumentation, processing methods, and IFUs.
  • Monitors workflow progression and facilitates movement of instruments and supplies to support patient care needs.
  • Identifies and resolves operational issues, escalating as appropriate.
  • Communicates with OR staff, nursing units, physicians, vendors, and other stakeholders regarding priorities and status.
  • Verifies instrument readiness by monitoring processing status and addressing potential concerns.
  • Provides hands-on support for complex instrument processing activities and vendor trays.
  • Maintains instrument traceability and uses the tracking system for visibility.

Purpose Statement / Position Summary:

The Coord, SPD/MDC Shift serves as the department's lead technical resource and operational coordinator during assigned shifts, supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant reprocessing of surgical instruments, flexible endoscopes, and patient care equipment. This position coordinates daily workflow activities, monitors operational priorities, provides technical guidance to staff, and facilitates communication between Sterile Processing, procedural areas, and clinical departments to support patient care needs. The coordinator identifies and resolves operational issues, promotes adherence to established departmental procedures, and supports service excellence through effective workflow management, instrument traceability, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. This position may provide functional direction and technical guidance to staff during assigned shifts but does not have responsibility for performance evaluations, disciplinary action, scheduling, hiring, or other supervisory functions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job:
  • Coordinates daily workflow activities within Sterile Processing to support the timely completion of decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, storage, and distribution activities based on procedural schedules, departmental priorities, and patient care needs.
  • Serves as the primary technical resource during assigned shifts, providing guidance regarding instrumentation, equipment, processing methods, manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs), and departmental procedures.
  • Monitors workflow progression throughout all functional areas of the department and facilitates timely movement of instruments, equipment, and supplies to support customer and patient care requirements.
  • Identifies, investigates, and assists in resolving operational issues including instrument discrepancies, missing instruments, workflow interruptions, equipment concerns, documentation inconsistencies, and processing delays, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Communicates routinely with Operating Room personnel, procedural areas, nursing units, physicians, vendors, and other stakeholders regarding instrument priorities, case support needs, equipment availability, and operational status.
  • Verifies instrument tray, case cart, and specialty equipment readiness by monitoring processing status, identifying potential concerns, and facilitating resolution of issues that may affect clinical operations.
  • Provides hands‑on technical support for complex instrument processing activities, specialty instrumentation, vendor trays, and unique procedural requirements.
  • Demonstrates established work practices and processing techniques to support staff learning, reinforce standard operating procedures, and promote consistency in departmental operations.
  • Utilizes the instrument tracking system to monitor workflow status, verify documentation accuracy, ensure instrument traceability, and support operational visibility throughout the department.
  • Coordinates the receipt, processing, prioritization, documentation, and return of loaner instrumentation, vendor trays, and specialty equipment in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Monitors supply and instrumentation availability during assigned shifts and communicate shortages, concerns, or operational risks to department leadership.
  • Collects operational information and communicates workflow concerns, process barriers, equipment issues, and service opportunities to department leadership to support departmental effectiveness and continuous improvement.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment through adherence to infection prevention practices, safety procedures, equipment handling requirements, and departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and customer service when interacting with staff, physicians, patients, vendors, and clinical departments.
  • Complies with organizational policies, departmental procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements related to assigned duties.
  • Demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality in accordance with organizational expectations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements:
Experience:

Education:

  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required.
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) preferred.
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocess or (CER) preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) preferred.
