Coordinator Skilled Trades Labs (PT) - Overhead Electrical Line Worker (OELW)

COORDINATOR - SKILLED TRADES LAB (PART-TIME) - OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL LINE WORKER (OELW)

Reporting to the Dean – Dawson Technical Institute, a Coordinator - Skilled Trades Lab PT (OELW) works with students in an outdoor or indoor lab environment to provide field training, demonstrating and instructing on techniques and work tasks performed in high voltage electrical line work as part of the Overhead Electrical Line Worker (OELW) Program’s curriculum.

The Coordinator - Skilled Trades Lab PT (OELW) demonstrates, observes, and instructs students practicing learned skills and techniques, as well as the use and operation of power equipment in high voltage work. Also oversees the repair and maintenance of OELW equipment and tools; maintains proper inventory of supplies; and supports instructors and faculty providing classroom and lab instruction to help meet program needs. Performs related duties as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Sets up and prepares indoor and outdoor lab environment for demonstration of and practice of techniques and skills in performing physical/manual work activities and/or operating equipment.
  2. Demonstrates a variety of OELW climbing techniques (i.e. aerial/pole climbing, operation and use of power equipment (e.g. use of bucket trucks, cable pullers), and construction safety and rescue practices in a lab environment.
  3. Assists Instructors with lab activities to supplement and ensure proper coordination with classroom instruction.
  4. Inspects, organizes, and checks equipment and supplies used during labs to ensure proper operating condition and proper functioning.
  5. Maintains inventory records of equipment and supplies; orders supplies; and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
  6. Reports equipment failures or in need of repair to management and takes appropriate steps to ensure safety of students and staff.
  7. Provides information to current and prospective students about the OELW program.
  8. Provides additional laboratory scheduling and assists students during open lab hours for review or practice of laboratory-related aspects.
  9. Assists with group tours, recruitment efforts, and prospective student interviews as necessary.
  10. Participates in all program and departmental meetings.
  11. Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Completion of an Electrical Line Worker program.
  2. Two years of experience as an overhead electrical line worker for a utility company preferred but not necessary.
  3. OSHA 10 safety certification with electrical and distribution systems (ET&D).
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of electric theory and all aspects of overhead high voltage electric line including overhead and underground distribution structures and equipment.
  5. Knowledge and ability to demonstrate safety and rescue techniques and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mandatory in the high voltage utility industry.
  6. Physical ability to demonstrate techniques such as aerial climbing and use of power line equipment and hand tools and related overhead line work techniques.
  7. Ability to operate and drive utility vehicles associated with the program.
  8. Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  9. Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
  10. Some proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
