Job summary

Sumter School District seeks a Coordinator of Special Services for Secondary to provide leadership for district programs for students with disabilities, overseeing IEPs and policy compliance. The role supports SPED teachers and leads district-level initiatives to ensure high quality services.

The incumbent collaborates with district staff and community partners to ensure students with disabilities transition to postsecondary options and achieve diplomas or credentials.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree or higher in Special Education or related area
• South Carolina certification in Special Education
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a special education teacher
• Experience in special education policies, and the development of individualized education plans (IEPs)

Responsibilities

• Provides guidance, leadership and professional development for special education teachers in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans.
• Serves as a member of the Special Education Leadership team to analyze data, assist in policy/procedure development, and determine professional development needs.
• Works with Executive Director of Student Support Services and HR on recruitment/retention of SPED teachers.
• Serves on the district team for teacher support and evaluation for Special Education teachers.
• Participates in special education meetings to ensure compliance with state and federal policies.
• Coordinates with district, community, and state stakeholders to ensure students with disabilities graduate with a high school diploma or appropriate postsecondary placement.
• Conducts Special Services Lead Teacher meetings to provide policy/procedure guidance.
• Collaborates with district personnel to provide academic and behavior supports for students with disabilities.
• Collaborates with instructional staff to provide professional development in specially designed instruction.
• Provides guidance to administrators to maintain compliance with mandates for students with disabilities.
• Offers guidance to high school teams on transitions, curricula and federal mandates.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides guidance, leadership and professional development for special education teachers in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans.

• Works collaboratively with district personnel (e.g. counselors, psychologists, behavior specialists) in order to provide appropriate academic and behavior supports to maintain positive learning environments for students with disabilities.
• Works collaboratively with instructional staff (teachers, coaches and coordinators) to provide professional development in specially designed instruction for students with disabilities.
• Works collaboratively with the Executive Director of Student Support Services in order to provide guidance to district and school administrators to maintain compliance with Federal, State and local mandates for students with disabilities.
• Provide guidance to high school teams on student transitions, curriculmn and federal mandates.
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordancewith provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation.
