The Coordinator of Peer Support Services will oversee Association for Mental Health and Wellness’ peer led programs and ensure that peer specialist working in all programs are following best practices in field of peer support, focusing on recovery and wellness. The Coordinator of Peer Support Services will create and maintain relationships with providers and community leaders to ensure the agency is informed of opportunities to expand peer support within MHAW and across Long Island.

The position requires travel throughout Suffolk County, personal automobile and a clean NYS Driver’s License are required; mileage reimbursement provided.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Oversee MHAW Peer Support Services, including the Peer Specialist Training Program, Recovery Center, Peer Warm Line, Peer Bridger Program, and in the future Crisis Residence peer staff, ensuring the programs are meeting metrics and delivering high quality services
  • Provide ongoing supervision and guidance to peer specialists, ensuring they are competent and ethical in their work.
  • Provide strategies to build the peer workforce
  • Keep up to date on opportunities to expand the work of peer specialist and regulations guiding peer work
  • Promoting Recovery-Oriented Services
  • Support the development of MHAW’s peer specialists’ skills and knowledge, including training on ethical problem-solving and professional growth
  • Build and maintain strong community partnerships;
  • Prepare monthly reports, analyze data and develop and implement strategies for ensuring key metrics and provocatively expectations are met;
  • Advocate for peer specialists and their work, ensuring their voices are heard and their contributions are valued;
  • Facilitate communication between peer specialists and other staff members, both clinical and non-clinical
  • Ensure peer specialists are trained and adhere to ethical guidelines and standards.
  • Monitor the performance of peer specialists and provide feedback for improvement.
  • Oversee the and assist to facilitate the Careers in Recovery and Wellness (CRW) peer training, including interviewing and selecting participants, preparing materials, coordinating speakers and classes, teaching, monitoring attendance, and planning graduation ceremonies.
  • Ensure that CRW materials are regularly updated and enhanced
  • Provide individual and group-based employment support to CRW students, graduates, and prospective peer candidates, including through community education and support events.
  • Develop strategies and marketing plans to promote the Peer programs, in collaboration with agency leadership.
  • Perform essential administrative tasks, such as mailings, phone outreach, material preparation, and data entry.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in a human services field preferred
  • Six years experience as a professional peer advocate or service provider in a mental health-related field
  • Certification required; Credentialed as a NYS Certified Peer Specialist
  • At least 3 years of peer supervision and program management

  • Excellent inter-personal communication including the ability to establish empathic, empowering relationships with people who have experienced psychiatric, substance abuse challenges, trauma as well as chronic physical health conditions;
  • Strong communication skills and collaboration skills;
  • Understanding of the key elements of recovery and wellness and the pillars of peer support
  • Sound organizational skills including computer skills
  • Basic knowledge of the public health/mental health system, public entitlement and social service programs;
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and reliable transportation
