Job summary

American Red Cross in Omaha manages Regional Fleet Programs, overseeing registrations, maintenance, fuel and vehicle cards, insurance, and inventory. The role ensures compliance with DOT regulations and ARC policies, while supervising staff and volunteers to support fleet operations across the region.

Responsibilities include maintenance oversight, on-call emergency support, budget input, and coordination with regional departments to ensure fleet readiness for official business and disaster

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent; valid Class A CDL; ability to pass DOT road-tests.
  • Minimum 7 years of fleet management experience in a regulated setting preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily maintenance and repair of the Regional Fleet Maintenance Program, including registrations and inventory.
  • Assist with 24/7 emergency vehicle breakdowns and repairs.
  • Maintain DOT vehicle maintenance and inspections per FMCSA regulations and ARC directives.
  • Assist with blood drive coverage and Mobile Unit assignments as needed.
  • Support transportation budget formulation in collaboration with the Manager.

Job description

Provide customer service for Regional Fleet Management and assist with the management of fleet operations within the Region. Manage the Regional Fleet Programs, which include motor vehicle registrations, operational and organizational maintenance, vehicle emergency safety equipment, issuance, use, and inventory, ARC gasoline and minor maintenance cards, enforcement of authorized use of ARC vehicles, vehicle sales, accident recovery and claims, and formulation and compliance of fleet budgets. Provide support, development, and leadership guidance to all volunteers. Perform all duties in compliance with standard operating procedures and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily maintenance and repair of the Regional Fleet Maintenance Program, including motor vehicle registrations, operational and organizational maintenance, issuance, use, and inventory of vehicle emergency safety equipment, gasoline and minor maintenance cards, vehicle sales, and accident recovery and claims.
  • Assist as required with emergency situations involving vehicle breakdowns and repairs of fleet assets; be on call 24/7 for emergency purposes.
  • Maintain DOT vehicle maintenance and required inspections in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and ARC directives; assign vehicles to regional staff for official business trips; schedule vehicle maintenance and ensure accurate vehicle assignment, dates, and times; coordinate fleet repairs with regional departments and districts; renew vehicle insurance cards; ensure vehicles requiring county emission tests are completed on time; keep all vehicle decals and licenses current.
  • Assist as warranted in covering blood drives during emergency situations; ensure Mobile Unit vehicle assignments are adequate for blood drive coverage relative to out-of-service units.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the fleet database.
  • May assist with the periodic movement of vehicles within the region.
  • Assist the Manager in the formulation of the Transportation Department Budget.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School or equivalent required. Must meet DOT Physical Qualifications and Examinations. Must possess a valid Class A-CDL; a CDL-B is preferred. Must be able to perform DOT road‑tests.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of related experience in vehicle fleet management or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Public health or blood banking experience in a highly regulated setting is preferred.
  • Management Experience: N/A.
  • Skills & Abilities: Ability to work independently; excellent organizational, oral, and written communication and interpretation skills; good interpersonal skills for working with multiple levels of staff and management; general knowledge of computer programs; ability to travel periodically to move fleet or perform inspections; may have on‑call duties; ability to work on a team; minimum height of 60 inches required to safely operate a cargo van or large truck.
  • Travel: Must be able to drive throughout the region.
  • Combination Requirement: Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies the requirements so long as the total years equate to the description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (management experience cannot be substituted).
Physical Requirements

Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Physical requirements may include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., squatting, pushing or pulling heavy weights up and down ramps and stairs, good manual dexterity, the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, and adaptation to long, irregular hours and frequent schedule changes. At the American Red Cross, many staff participate in mobile blood drives at businesses, schools, and other locations, which involve pushing carts up to 250 lbs., setting up beds, and handling many totes containing equipment and snacks for donors.
