Job summary

  • Presents outreach and training to freshmen and sophomores; uses data to support program goals.
  • Provides guidance to develop effective advisement promoting academic progress; performs related duties.

Job Title

Coordinator, First and Second Year Experience

Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to administer the First/Second Year Experience program;plan, organize, and coordinate assigned function, activities,services, and operations of the program; perform a full range oftechnical, program support, and clerical duties in support of theprogram; coordinate with other departments and program areas
  • Develops yearly calender of events, workshops, and otherschedules related to activities and services; review, update, andinform others of essential timelines; coordinate assignedactivities; ensure the timely completion of work in accordance withestablished policies, procedures, and standards
  • Evaluates progress of new student programs to ensure continuousimprovement and growth
  • In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research,tracks student enrollment and retention statistics, gathers data,and writes reports regarding program success and impact
  • Ability to teach post-secondary students to make soundeducation planning decisions and develop academic successskills
  • Coordinates communications for the program’s website, andcoordinate and supervise student leaders
  • Makes effective presentations for outreach and trainingpurposes for freshman and sophomore students
  • Provides analytical data used to support student successactivities and programs to the dean and retention specialist
  • Provides guidance to develop, implement, and maintain effectiveand efficient advisement that promotes satisfactory academicperformance and progression of students toward the completion ofcoursework and graduation.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Education, or related fieldrequired.
  • A minimum of (5) years of counseling or other appropriateexperience, and a demonstrated experience of having worked withstudents in an academic environment preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of counseling, learning, and human developmenttheories; academic advising and student success practices; andstrategies that support intellectual, personal, and careerdevelopment of first- and second-year students.
  • Knowledge of educational planning principles and regulatoryrequirements related to student assessment, academic placement, andstudent records, including FERPA and other compliancestandards.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the abilityto clearly convey information to students, faculty, staff, andadministrators.
  • Skill in advising, coaching, and supporting students inacademic planning, goal setting, and personal development.
  • Skill in using educational and office technologies, includingMicrosoft Office, email/internet applications, social platforms,and student information systems to support student services andreporting.
  • Skill in tracking student progress, maintaining accuratedocumentation, and preparing reports related to student success,retention, and interventions.
  • Ability to engage effectively, empathetically, andprofessionally with diverse student populations, particularlyfirst- and second-year students.
  • Ability to teach and reinforce academic success skills,self-advocacy, and educational planning competencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow institutionalprocedures, meet timelines, and manage sensitive studentinformation responsibly.
  • Ability to provide targeted interventions and support forat-risk or academically vulnerable students as appropriate.
  • Ability to assist in the design, implementation, assessment,and continuous improvement of first-year and second-year experienceprograms and initiatives.
  • Ability to collaborate with academic departments, studentaffairs units, and administrative offices to support studentsuccess and retention.
