Job summary

Brandywine School District is seeking a Coordinator for Building Special Education on a 10-month contract. The role involves maintaining special education records, coordinating with speech/language, OT/PT, school psychologists, counselors and social workers to determine eligibility, placement and programming for services.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in Special Education (Master's preferred), is certified as a Teacher of Exceptional Children, and has at least 3 years of SPED teaching

Qualifications

  • Current Certification as a Teacher of Exceptional Children Special Education.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a Special Education teacher.
  • Strong organizational skills and computer literacy.

  • Select and administer formal and informational assessments to determine eligibility for special education services.
  • Participate in/facilitate IEP meetings regarding eligibility, placement, and transition.

  • Compile and maintain reports and documentation in paper and student management systems.
  • Ensure compliance with federal/state policies and district guidelines in special education services.
  • Consult with parents and staff on educational and emotional/behavioral needs and data interpretation.
  • Represent BSD in IEP meetings for programs outside the district.

Job Goal

To maintain special education records for the building(s) assigned (audit files and student management computer systems). Staff will work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities including speech/language therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and school psychologists, counselors and social workers to determine eligibility, placement and programming for special education services.

Job Qualifications
  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Current Certification as a Teacher of Exceptional Children Special Education
  • Must have at least 3 years' experience as a Special Education teacher.
  • Must have a high degree of organizational skills as well as computer literacy.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding ability to motivate and build relationships with students and parents to promote student achievement and strengthen community partnerships.
  • Commendable history of effective leadership, extra-curricular participation, an acceptable attendance record, and exemplary performance.
Essential Functions
  • Select and administer formal and informational assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and Delaware's Administrative Manual for Special Education Services.
  • Participate/facilitate IEP meeting regarding eligibility, IEP development, appropriate placement, Manifestation Determinations and transition.
  • Provide staff development training to assist school personnel in the identification and understanding of students with disabilities (if requested).
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documentation required (paper and student management computer system).
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, and the Brandywine School District board policy in the area of assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.
  • Consult with parents and staff concerning the educational and emotional /behavioral needs of students and interpretation of assessment data.
  • Represent BSD in IEP meetings for students placed in programs outside of the district.
