Position Title

Position Summary

Develops, manages and facilities all policies and procedures that relate to football equipment operations in the Athletics Department. Manages an equipment budget for annual purchases including uniforms, helmets, headsets, practice equipment, sideline apparel and other equipment operational needs. Responsible for safety awareness, precautions and compliance as it relates to practice and game day equipment protocols. Provides supervision and training to student managers and others as designated.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience that equates to four years.
  • Relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications and database management.
  • Demonstrated ability to project a positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with risk management and/or OSHA principles.
  • Experience supervising graduate assistants, interns, and student workers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Consults with football coaching staff personnel to determine specific sport team needs relative to equipment and apparel.
  • Evaluates qualitative needs of respective sport teams and is responsible for the development and adjustment of policies as trends are determined.
  • Provides expert recommendations to supervisor on researched changes and commensurate adjustments needed within the equipment segment.
  • Develops, interprets, implements, and adjusts the equipment operating procedures for the football program.
  • Contributes to the development and updating of department wide equipment policy.
  • Negotiates with suppliers for product and related pricing options.
  • Evaluates and selects vendors for equipment and apparel purchases.
  • Researches the needs of sport teams, investigates options available to respective sports and develops retail packaging of products.
  • Ensures purchasing activity conforms to University procurement policy.
  • Responsible for safety awareness, precautions, and compliance as it relates to practice and game day equipment protocols.
  • Meets with the risk management department to ascertain safety precautions and procedures effecting athletic equipment areas.
  • Ensures reconditioning and certification cycles for protective equipment meet applicable standards and that equipment issuance conforms to NCAA and conference requirements.
  • Formulates policies for the purchase of athletic department equipment and apparel for sport teams.
  • Oversees inventory operations using a computer database system.
  • Provides oversight to maintain detailed record-keeping within sport equipment areas.
  • Establishes an inventory budget control mechanism and forecasts anticipated costs.
  • Produces inventory, usage, and cost reports for departmental and institutional use.
  • Analyzes consumption against budget and adjusts inventory control procedures accordingly.
  • Reviews and approves equipment expenditures within delegated authority and identifies budget variances.
  • Develops and administers the annual football equipment budget.
  • Directs, advises and evaluates a full-time employee in equipment operations.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, assigns, and evaluates student sport managers for respective sports.
  • Develops training materials and operating standards for student staff.
  • Delegates routine equipment room operations to student staff and oversees their execution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
