Summary of Essential Functions

• Responsible and accountable for optimizing available resources while independently and collaboratively assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of the surgical patient.
• Responsible for providing leadership, clinical expertise and functional direction to other members of the health care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Act as mentor and educator for others in a particular service specialty. Assume charge of the Surgery Unit to supervise and coordinate delivery of specialized care to patients of various acuity levels.

Educational Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse or Certified Surgical Tech
• Current CPR.
• Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR) preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Must have a minimum of two years of experience in perioperative nursing.
• Must be able to coordinate, facilitate and manage change efforts to ensure the highest level of standard of care in a specific service specialty.
• Must have good communication skills with patients, physicians, team members, allied health personnel and co-workers to facilitate continuity of patient care.
• Ability to perform under stress when confronted with an emergency, critical or unusual situation in which speed, accuracy and leadership are critical.
• Must be adaptable, flexible and is able to set priorities quickly.
• Must be able to follow instructions accurately and document information correctly.

Physical Requirements

• Lengthy periods of standing.
• Move gurneys, carts and equipment.
• Assists with the positioning of surgical patients for surgery.
• Carry and lift instrument sets (trays) and various items of equipment. Medium strength requirement. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Involves minimal temperature and moderate noise level changes.
• Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand-to-eye coordination.
• Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Accurately verifies patient’s identity utilizing patient name and six-digit MR#. Verifies correct operative site, correct procedure and surgeon according to Correct Site Surgery policy.
• Evaluates patient’s status by assessing respiratory, circulatory, renal, musculoskeletal, neurological systems and skin integrity.
• Assesses patient’s psychosocial status, including but not limited to, level of understanding, perception of surgery, anxiety level, religious and cultural beliefs.
• Checks for current history and physical, laboratory results, accurate and complete consents, current pre-op orders and results or diagnostic tests. Obtains radiological/imaging studies pertinent to procedure.
• Utilizes the nursing process to formulate plan of care for surgical intervention, and is able to revise the plan of care quickly as necessary.
• Plans patient care by obtaining accurate "pick" sheet for specific procedure and for charging purposes.
• Functions within guidelines of RN job responsibilities for coordination of supplies, equipment and instrumentation for intraoperative care. Does safety checks of equipment and environment prior to procedures.
• Reviews future schedules and plans for equipment, supplies and materials, loaner equipment, implants, etc., necessary for procedures in service specialty.
• Competently provides direct care to patients as assigned, utilizing RN criteria.
• Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period.
• Competently acts as scrub nurse in service specialty, and is able to precept others.
• Administers/dispenses medications, drugs or solutions according to policy. Able to safely administer IV Conscious Sedation according to policy and as ordered by physician. Knowledgeable of drugs, medications and reversal agents, and monitors patient status throughout the procedure.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills to evaluate patient outcomes and to facilitate process improvement.
• Works with Contract Specialist and Product Coordinator to set up evaluations for new supplies, equipment and/or instruments in service specialty.
• Recognizes that OR records are legal documents that must accurately reflect the patient’s care in the perioperative period.
• Accurately documents perioperative patient assessment. Accurately and consistently documents plan of care and outcomes on the intraoperative record.
• Documentation is legible with correct spelling and no abbreviations.
• Accurately documents descriptions of roles of personnel involved in procedures, with correct In/Out times for procedure and personnel.
• Accurately documents all medical devices/ implants utilized for procedure. Completes "pick" sheets accurately for charging/utilization/inventory purposes.
• Documents surgical "pause" for Correct Site surgery protocol.
• Able to effectively solve problems through fact-finding, research, facilitation, forming plan of action and evaluation or outcomes.
• Utilizes data to determine if problem is structural, process or outcome based, and works with management to formulate change.
• Is an active participant in the process for improving patient care and disseminates information related to PI initiatives. Demonstrates ability to provide environment of safety for positive patient outcomes.
• Communicates with staff members, physicians and management in regards to operational and capital budgetary planning and provides justification for need.
• Is able to develop a clear, detailed proposal for new services, equipment or supplies necessary for proposed projects and presents to management in a concise format.
• Works with Contract Specialist, products coordinator, manager, co-workers and physicians for standardization within service specialty and across specialties.
• Demonstrates knowledge of inventory control, resource management and product coordination, and works effectively with Surgical Services Materials Management to achieve goals.
• Demonstrates high level of expertise in service specialty. Provides guidance, support and constructive feedback within specialty to staff, and is professional role model to others.
• Acts as mentor within specialty and coordinates with educator to develop and initiate a plan of action for education when necessary.
• Conducts employee evaluations and disciplinary counselings as necessary.
• Demonstrates ability to utilize and troubleshoot technical equipment in service specialty and shares knowledge with others.
• Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
