Job summary

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Three years experience in acute OR setting; 12 months as RN in Orthopedic preferred.
  • State RN license current/valid or equivalent per state regulations.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certificates or within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource to teammates, support services, and physicians; maintain sterile field.
  • Promote growth through precepting, mentoring, and orientation; provide feedback to manager.
  • Keep the surgical area clean and organized; assist in instrument and sponge removal.
  • Assist in room turnover; ensure sterile and safe surgical environment.
  • Maintain supply inventory and timely delivery of needed care; alert administration as needed.
  • Prepare patient for the procedure and educate prior to surgery; participate in handoffs.
  • Contribute to OR metrics and process improvements to meet department goals.
  • Assess patient condition and collaborate with physician to develop care plan during surgery.
  • Accept other related responsibilities as required.

Job description

Ensure safe patient care within the peri-op unit. Ensuring that proper patient identification, time outs, resources, and supplies are available to maintain a safe environment.

  • Serves as a resource to teammates, support services, and physicians; working side by side with scrub to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room. Ensures that the sterile field is not compromised during the procedure.
  • Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate. Serves as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development, providing pertinent feedback to manager or designee.
  • Keeps the surgical area clean and organized for the scrub and the physician; removes instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure.
  • Assist in room turnover process and that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient. Ensuring that the goals of the unit are met and maintained to provide for better room utilization.
  • Maintains environment and supply inventory, including assuring the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment and expertise, and the timely delivery of needed care, and alerting administration of these needs in a timely manner.
  • Prepares the patient for the procedure and handles the preparation for the operating room including educating the patient before the surgery takes place and participates in patient handoff during times of transition.
  • Is engaged in helping to ensure that OR metrics, process improvement, work processes, providing solutions and actions plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
  • Assesses the patient’s condition before a surgical procedure and works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.
EDUCATION

Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

Three years previous experience in acute OR setting, with at least 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the Orthopedic specialty area is preferred.

Requirements
  • A current, valid RN license in state of practice or equivalent per state regulations.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 90 days of hire.
KNOWLEDGE
  • The job holder must demonstrate current competencies for job position.
  • Knowledge necessary to make appropriate clinical decisions and interactions relative to the specific age of a patient.
  • Knowledge and understanding of disease processes and perioperative care.
  • Knowledge of hospital organization, universal precautions, and maintenance of a safe environment.
Skills
  • Skills validation/certification of competencies for the duties and responsibilities of a perioperative teammates, including the maintaining annual skill maintenance requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing and the skill of listening.
  • Skills required to provide excellent customer service not only to our patients, but physicians, visitors, and other health care teammates, promoting a positive work environment.
Abilities
  • Must have a strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long arduous work hours.
  • Ability to work in an environment that frequently produces a high level of stress and mental fatigue, and a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule as needed.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple work priorities and support to teammates.

Normal and emergent clinical environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, blood and body fluids, infectious disease and to chemical or electrical hazards.
