Job summary

b aysystemsinc seeks a Mechanical Engineer – Water Systems in Berkeley, CA to lead the design, operation, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement of cooling water infrastructure for ALS-U and ALS operations.

This role requires close coordination with engineering, facilities, EH&S, and scientific staff to ensure water systems meet performance, safety, and availability targets while adhering to mechanical and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
• 8+ years of related experience in design/operation/maintenance of industrial water systems.
• Experience with LCW/DI water systems, pumps, heat exchangers, and control instrumentation.
• Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and engineering of cooling water systems for ALS-U and ALS operations.
• Develop system architectures, P&IDs, and hydraulic calculations.
• Oversee procurement and installation of pumps, heat exchangers, and water treatment.
• Coordinate integration with accelerator, beamline, and facility systems.
• Maintain safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance.
• Develop preventive maintenance programs and monitor system performance.
