Job description

Overview

The cook prepares entrees, vegetables, and pureed foods for patient food service, as well as entrees and vegetables for the employees' and visitors' cafeteria. The cook also assists in cleaning operations within the food service area on a timely basis.

Responsibilities

  1. Preparation and cooking
  2. Thaws meats and follows safety guidelines
  3. Maintains clean and sanitized food contact surfaces
  4. Uses thermometers to determine proper food temperatures
  5. Stores food properly to avoid contamination
  6. Washes hands and practices good personal hygiene (e.g., trimmed and clean fingernails, hairnets)
  7. Uses proper food handling procedures: washes hands, wears gloves
  8. Follows FIFO storage principles
  9. Prepares specific orders from tally sheets provided by food techs
  10. Prepares food according to individual health needs

Maintaining food quality and production

  1. Follows standardized recipes and menus
  2. Prepares and serves visually appealing items
  3. Cooks and reheats food to standards
  4. Follows safety guidelines for cooled foods
  5. Assists in trimming meat, vegetable prep, grinding, stirring sauces, preparing soups, and monitoring cooking
  6. Uses proper sanitation for cleaning equipment and utensils
  7. Ensures consistent food texture, taste, color, and appearance
  8. Prepares catering meals and tray line service
  9. Determines appropriate food quantities to minimize waste
  10. Assists in meal prep to optimize time efficiency

Maintaining a positive working relationship

  1. Works cooperatively with kitchen staff, food aides, process coordinators, management, and other departments
  2. Focuses on customer needs and quality improvement
  3. Conducts self professionally
  4. Follows dress code and badge protocols
  5. Wears hair restraints and gloves when preparing food
  6. Completes required educational training (e.g., ADA, Hazardous Material, Safety, Communication)
  7. Serves nutritious meals supporting patient recovery and provides balanced options for visitors and staff

Fulfilling educational requirements

  1. Performs duties as a cook, preferably with institutional or hospital experience or training
  2. Completes required training on ADA, confidentiality, hazardous materials, safety, and communication
