Job Summary

The cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, seasoning, and serving attractive, nutritious, and balanced meals, including meat, fish, fowl, vegetables, fruits, soups, salads, desserts, breads, and pastries, as specified by the menus. The role involves carrying out duties in accordance with federal and state regulations, as well as company policies.

Position Overview
  • Handle and prepare palatable, attractive food
  • Follow meal schedules and standard recipes
  • Make independent decisions based on experience
  • Understand proper food handling and hazards
  • Know seasoning and cooking times
  • Be familiar with various cuts of meats, fish, and fowl
  • Estimate quantities and monitor portion control
  • Prepare ingredients: peel, wash, trim, cut vegetables and fruits; de-bone and trim meats, fish, and fowl
  • Taste, smell, and observe food for quality and appearance
  • Serve food according to dietary guidelines, checking for completeness and accuracy
  • Cook using baking, roasting, stewing, steaming; make gravies, stocks, sauces, and soups
  • Prepare cold dishes and beverages

Education: High school diploma preferred; minimum ability to read and write English.

Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare dietary department preferred.
