Job Summary

The Minnesota Veterans Home (MVH)-Silver Bay is seeking to fill a part-time, rotating day/evening cook. Day shift is: 6:30am-3:00pm, the evening shift is: 11:30am-8:00pm.

The work schedule will include at least 16 hours per 2-week pay period and may include additional work hours, based on business needs. The position is not initially eligible for employer contribution towards health and dental insurance benefits.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Washing and cleaning work area, utensils, and equipment
  • Preparing items from menu according to standard recipes
  • Preparing special diets, substituting for menu items when required
  • Receive and store inventory
  • Administer proper storage of food and supplies to ensure sanitary and safe conditions
  • Follow established food handling, food holding, and food storage procedures and provide direction to Food Service Workers as necessary
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Large-scale cooking methods and equipment sufficient to prepare and serve food for a large number of people and adjust recipes to accommodate different numbers of people
  • Food values and nutrition sufficient to prepare items from standard recipes
  • Health and safety principles involved in food preparation operations sufficient to prepare and serve safe and healthy meals

Ability to:

  • Follow instructions and read and comprehend written instructions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience cooking in a large long-term care facility
  • Experience with inventory and stocking
Additional Requirements

This position requires successful completion of the following:

  • A Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check may be conducted on the top finalist(s) for the position(s). When conducted, a finalist must pass the DHS background check.
  • A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.
  • Employee reference checks will be conducted on all finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance. It also includes contact with the applicant's former employer(s).
