Job description

Responsibilities
  • Prepares and cooks a variety of menu items and works alone or with the assistance of a higher‑grade cook or supervisor, preparing a variety of foods and desserts according to menu requirements.
  • Follows health and safety precautions to ensure safe preparation and storage of food items. Monitors and maintains appropriate temperature of all food items throughout preparation and service.
  • Takes inventory to determine ordering requirements, loads hot foods in carts, sets up and serves food as necessary and checks food for appropriate preparation, temperature, and packaging.
  • Has basic knowledge of food preparation principles and a practical understanding of the physical processes that occur in cooking. Understands proper cooking temperatures and preparation methods for a variety of foods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Direct deposit and a social security card are required.
  • Meet qualification, eligibility, and background requirements for this position.
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E‑Verify) check.
  • Complete a minimum of four hours of initial food sanitation and safety training within 30 days of employment and attend a four‑hour refresher training annually.
  • Pass all pre‑employment checks in accordance with AR 215‑3, para. 2, including a medical examination.
  • May be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card to access federally‑controlled facilities.
Qualifications

Resumes must be two pages (or less). Resumes should clearly demonstrate the applicant’s relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities as they pertain to this position.

A minimum of six months of work experience directly related to the duties described above, including skill in working with professional kitchen appliances and equipment. Be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English.

Benefits and Allowances
  • This job falls under the Federal Wage Schedule (FWS). FWS employees earn overtime pay for working more than eight hours in a day or more than forty hours in a week—whichever gives the employee more benefit. Regular full‑time, part‑time, and regularly scheduled flexible employees may receive Sunday premium pay for work on Sundays. Employees may also be eligible to receive extra pay if the majority of their scheduled hours falls after 3:00 PM.
  • Regular full‑time and part‑time employees are eligible for enrollment in health and life insurance, participation in 401 k and retirement plans, and paid personal time off and federal holidays.
  • NAF flexible employees who work in the United States or are a U.S. citizen, spouse, or child of a U.S. citizen working for a NAFI in a foreign area are eligible to participate in the NAF 401 k plan. Some flexible employees may also be eligible to receive health insurance.
Access to Federal Facilities
  • Access to certain federal facilities may require a REAL ID‑compliant driver’s license/ID (marked with a star) or an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) from WA, MI, MN, NY, or VT.
