Job summary

Child-Parent Centers, Inc. is seeking an entry-level Cook for the Marana Head Start site. The role involves preparing meals that meet CACFP and Head Start standards, planning menus, and ordering supplies for a full-time program in a busy kitchen.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid Arizona driver’s license, and prior food service experience. It is an in-person, daytime schedule with some evenings or weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch and snacks following CACFP and Head Start guidelines.
  • Plan meals, calculate food needs, and place orders using the centralized system.
  • Maintain kitchen sanitation and cleanliness; handle dishes and surfaces.
  • Demonstrate sanitary practices and personal hygiene in food prep.
  • Provide nutrition information to children and parents and assist activities.
  • Prepare, deliver and pick up food carts as needed.
  • Store and label foods and prepare meals for dietary needs.

Overview

Position: Cook

Level: Entry | Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week | Location: Marana Head Start, 13660 North McDuff Road, Marana, AZ 85653

Schedule: Day shift, Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. In-person work; may require some evenings and weekends. Center may require work through mid-June to mid-July depending on program cycle.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, and snacks using cycle menus that comply with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Head Start guidelines.
  • Plan meals, calculate food requirements, and order food from the vendor using the centralized ordering system; limit local shopping to center workday times.
  • Maintain the kitchen to meet sanitation requirements; wash dishes, clean stoves, carts, and work surfaces; keep surfaces grease- and clutter-free.
  • Demonstrate sanitary practices in food preparation and personal hygiene.
  • Provide nutrition information and experiences for children and parents; assist with classroom nutrition activities as needed.
  • Prepare, deliver, and pick up food carts as required by center needs.
  • Store food properly, label and date all items, and prepare meals for children with special dietary needs.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED; must be 18 years of age.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license with an excellent driving record.
  • Experience in food service activities: meal preparation, meal scheduling, food handling and storage, inventory, ordering, and familiarity with CACFP requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; able to pass a company-paid physical exam and a DES Centralized Background Check.
  • Submit AZ Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card prior to start date.
  • Pass state-required immunizations and a Tuberculosis self-assessment according to policy.
  • Ability to obtain Arizona Food Safety Manager Certification and Food Handlers Certification within one month of employment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Indoor environment with exposure to heat, cleaning chemicals, sharp knives, hot foods and equipment.
  • Frequent activities: stooping, bending, reaching, carrying 0–25 lbs, operating kitchen equipment; occasional lifting 20–50 lbs; clerical tasks.
Other Requirements (post-hire)
  • Travel to different sites in a private vehicle as needed.
  • Provide proof of immunizations and maintain fingerprint clearance and annual background checks.
  • Right to work in the USA (I-9 verification required).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (including Infant/Child).
Experience (Desired)
  • Spanish language ability (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).
  • Three years’ experience with CACFP or School Lunch Program.
  • Three years’ experience with Head Start programs.
  • Experience with Office 365 (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
